Dia de los Muertos at Escuela John Paul I
As part of our Spanish Bilingual program, we not only learn the Spanish language but also participate in many traditions and customs of Spanish-speaking countries. This month, we celebrated "El Día de los Muertos"
"El Día de los Muertos (the Day of the Dead)", a Mexican celebration, is a day to celebrate, remember and prepare special foods in honor of those who have departed. On this day in Mexico, the streets near the cemeteries are filled with decorations of papel picado, flowers, candy calaveras (skeletons and skulls), and parades. Families clean and visit las tumbas (tombs). In the evening, cemeteries are beautifully lit up with candles. Marigold petals are strewn on the ground to help the spirits of the deceased find their way to their families.
In order to celebrate, the families make altares (altars) and place ofrendas (offerings) of food such as pan de muertos, candles, incense, yellow marigolds known as cempazuchitl and most importantly, photos of the departed souls are placed on the altar.

In-person Demonstration of Learning December 1, 2022
It is important that teachers, parents, and students are partners in education. Teachers share assessment information to communicate student progress. Assessment is the process of gathering information about what a student knows, understands, and can do in relation to learning outcomes established by Alberta Education. All schools in ECSD provide ongoing assessment as a variety of classroom assessments guide teachers with what they need to do next. Formal reporting to parents occurs at the Demonstration of Learning on December 1, 2022 and on March 16, 2023. In addition, through PowerTeacherPro, there is a formal snapshot of learning in January with the Summary Report, and an end of year Report Card in June.
In between these events, teachers may send work and projects home, send messages in agendas, coach students with how to talk about their learning, connect with parents, and review the IPP (if applicable) and some ongoing assessments may also be shared via PowerTeacherPro. Each school leverages a variety of ways to share student achievement, and some of these strategies may vary from one school to another as there are many ways to share the ongoing learning throughout the year. As always, if you are concerned regarding your child’s progress, it is important that you connect with your child’s teacher as soon as you are able. Edmonton Catholic Schools has a Parent Guide to Assessment and Reporting available on our public website to explain grading and reporting in Elementary. We also have a video to further explain how your child’s progress is assessed. Thank you for your ongoing commitment to your child’s learning. Parents play an important role in their child’s education; when parents, students and educators work together, students are successful! Please be sure to attend the upcoming Demonstration of Learning (December 1, 2022) at JPI!

Also, a friendly reminder to check out the oversized moveable chess game that is now at Jackie Parker Park. This idea was contributed by a resident in the Hillview community.
