North Branch Area Public Schools

IMPORTANT: Safe learning update

Big picture

Dear Families,

Last Wednesday, North Branch Area Public Schools (NBAPS) experienced its first lab-confirmed positive case of COVID-19. Since then six cases have been identified at one location, the North Branch Area Education Center (NBAEC), with the most recent positive cases reported just this morning. As of today, one case was reported at Sunrise, and no cases have been reported at the middle school or high school.

Today, in conjunction with county health officials, North Branch Area Public Schools has made the decision to shift to remote learning for Prek- grade 1 students through Wednesday, Oct. 14 as a result of these positive results for COVID-19 among PreK-1 students and staff. There will be no school for PreK through 1st grade students on Friday, Oct. 9.

PreK through grade 1 families will receive communication on Friday, Oct. 9, regarding the details of this remote learning period from their teachers/grade level. Remote learning is expected to begin on Monday, Oct. 12 and continue through Wednesday, Oct. 14. Thursday, Oct. 15, Friday, Oct. 16, and Monday, Oct. 19 are non-school days for all students. PreK-grade 1 students may return to school at the NBAEC on Tuesday, Oct. 20. In-school services for grades 2 through 12 will remain unchanged. See below for further information.

Working with public health officials, this targeted building-level response is preventative and appropriate. Chisago/Isanti county numbers continue to rise. As of today, county numbers surpassed 20 lab-confirmed positive cases per 10,000 county residents. Working with public health officials, numbers within NBAPS do not reflect the increases in the overall county. While the county’s positive cases are concentrated outside of the district at this time, school district decisions will continue to be made in collaboration with county officials. The remainder of NBAPS schools will continue operating at a level 2, while making adjustments towards a level 3.

Families with students identified as close contacts have been contacted and will be expected to keep their children home for the appropriate quarantine period. Those not identified as close contacts are welcome to utilize childcare services during the remote learning period. Please see childcare services information for affected families below. Also below is information for affected families who require meal service during the remote learning period.

Thank you to all families for your continued understanding and patience as we navigate challenging circumstances. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me at 651-674-1012 or spaul@isd138.org.

Sincerely,

Sara Paul

Superintendent

COVID-19 Coordinator

Grades 2 through 12 will remain in school

The decision to switch to remote learning at the North Branch Area Education Center will NOT affect in-person services at Sunrise, the middle school, or the high school. In-person hybrid learning will continue to take place at those schools. Those programs and buildings will continue operating at a level 2, while making adjustments towards a level 3 on the Flexible Learning Continuum. Again, all students grades 2-12 will continue to attend school. Families with children in multiple buildings can continue sending children to school as per MDH guidelines.
