Kingsley Connection

A weekly newsletter from the Kingsley Administrative Team...

March 12th, 2022

Dear Kingsley Families,

Just when we thought we were going into spring, the chilly weather and some snow returned. However, we are rounding the corner as we see blooms popping up around Kingsley! Remember to set your clocks back for Daylight Savings time this weekend.

As a reminder, if you signed your child up for Fun Lunch (ordering window has closed), it is Friday, March 18th. The next window to order for the April Fun Lunch closes on March 31st. Please see ordering information with the PTA information below.

See you Monday,

Mel Hackett and Eleni Gajewski

Congratulations, 5th Grade DG Grove Foundation Winners!

The Grove Foundation HELPING CHILDREN GROW program is primarily directed toward 5th grade students in Downers Grove. Two students are recognized by the Grove Foundation each year. Students are nominated based on their effort, positive attitude, character, and willingness to help others. While we had a LOT of students who were eligible for this award, we are proud to celebrate Gabi S. and Madison V. this year!

Workers on Tuesday, March 15th

We want our families to know that Kingsley has a generator that provides backup power to the District servers in the event that there is a loss of power. Within the last month, we have had mechanical issues with the generator. A service provider will be at Kingsley next week to make the repairs on the generator, located on the exterior of the building. The crews must perform the warranty work during the regular work/school hours. Therefore, recess will be held indoors for students who play on the intermediate playground due to large trucks and equipment on site. We appreciate your patience and understanding while we make these important repairs.

(REPEAT) March 15th is a school day!

District 58 updated its 2021-22 calendar last August. The updated calendar changed the date of the winter Teacher Institute Day. The updated calendar also changed Tuesday, March 15 to a school day (it was previously a non-school day due to Election Day; however, Election Day was moved to June 2022). Last August, we emailed the updated calendar to families and posted it on our website. We realize some families might still have the old calendar, so we wanted to remind you of the following:

  • Friday, March 4 is not a school day. (It's the County's Teacher Institute Day).
  • Tuesday, March 15 is a school day.

(REPEAT) Outdoor Education Update ...

Outdoor Education Fees Refunded for 6th grade families

District 58 has decided that our 6th students will not attend the outdoor education at Camp Edwards during this school year; this typically occurred in the fall (when there were mitigations in place that prohibited this kind of travel for students.) Though mitigations are beginning to lift throughout the state, we are beyond the point in the school year that we could schedule these trips; additionally, specific to Camp Edwards, the distance of travel and shared overnight accommodations open up many questions about distancing and shared spaces. We hope to resume outdoor education activities in the future - the District is investigating options for our students, potentially including a spring activity for our 6th graders.

The fees that were collected at registration last spring for outdoor education have now been refunded to families' PushCoin accounts. You will be able to use the credit in your PushCoin account to pay for registration fees for the 2022-23 school year; if you would prefer a cash refund, please contact Sonali Patil in the District 58 Business office (spatil@dg58.org).Any additional questions about outdoor education can be directed to Justin Sisul in the Curriculum department (jsisul@dg58.org)
