Opportunity
As you re-enter your classroom after winter break, take a moment to establish a goal for yourself and for your students. Take time to reflect on what has worked really well over the past months of the school year and keep those in your daily practice, but take even more time to reflect on what has not worked well and take advantage of the opportunity before you to make a change and create a new goal.
This is the start of a New Year!
Opportunity
op·por·tu·ni·ty
ˌäpərˈt(y)o͞onədē/
noun
noun: opportunity; plural noun: opportunities
a set of circumstances that makes it possible to do something
This is the time, the opportunity is here and now. We are in the midst of circumstances that make it possible to do something - ANYTHING! It is a time of renewed energy, a time of excitement of the possibility of all that a New Year holds within the next 365 days. Make the most of all of it - don't let one moment, one opportunity pass you by!

Monthly Focus
Learning Paths - Differentiated Instruction
As educators we know that no two students learn the same way - so why do we teach all students that same way? Our monthly instructional focus for January 2016 is Diverse Learners and Differentiated Instruction - take some time to review resources below focused on meeting the needs of each of our student learners. It is vitally important that we personalize the learning experience so that students can make personal connections to the material being presented.

Lifelong Learning Practices
Each month we have added a focus skill for teachers to be integrating into their teaching practice including student outcomes, close reading and marking the text, AVID Inquiry and Cornell notes along with technology in the classroom. We model for our students the practice of lifelong learning when we participate in Professional Development opportunities. Still looking for more resources - check out the link below.

Technology Integration
Technology certainly moves at a speed that at times we cannot even describe - it is advancing much faster than anyone ever expected. At times it seems like our students are ahead of us on the technology curve but we can certainly keep in the know. Below are some links to on-line education resources that can be integrated into teaching with ease. Take some time to identify one technology tool that will be best for you and your course.

Writing Folders
Throughout each marking period students should be writing and writing as often as possible. The more practice with writing the better students will become with writing - seems obvious.
At a minimum, teachers should be collecting 1 writing artifact per marking period and placing samples into the writing folders which will be collected a the end of the 1st semester. Please collect a low, middle and high scoring example of student writing to submit along with a copy of the assignment and scoring rubric.
Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD)
Did you know that we have a new chapter for SADD here at GBHS? If not check out the resources on the link below. Ms. Brice and Ms. Pascoe are the lead faculty advisors for this chapter. Please encourage students to get involved with this organization.
