Fabulous First Graders

Off and rolling!

Soaring like eagles!

Last week our community learned all about the Rose Glen "BE Statements". Students pledged to Be safe, Be kind, Be responsible, and Be respectful. We learned how to use our Be Statements in all areas of our school day. These will be essential agreements we will follow all year.

Reading & Language Workshop

We launched "Read to Self" time in class. We learned how to pick a "Good Fit Book" and talked about building reading stamina throughout the year to reach our end of the year goal of 30 independent reading minutes.

We also started our Language Workshop. In Language Workshop we discuss texts as a class. We discuss the language used by the author, illustrations, lesson of the text, etc. We are learning to use "Talk Moves" during our class discussions to agree or disagree with one another. Our first unit is based around the essential question "What is the value of community?" Below you can see some of the texts we are discussing the first few weeks.

Math Workshop

We are working on following class procedures during math workshop. We learned how to use our "Math talk moves". In particular we are working with our "turn and talk" partners to agree or disagree with each others answers. Students are working on number sense and ordering skills. We also are busy assessing students in order to put students in groups to meet their academic needs.

Science

Our first unit is about Space. Kids are learning about the earth and moon's rotation. We will also study the sun, stars and constellations to prepare us for our upcoming field trip to the Planetarium on October 3rd.

Coding

Twice a month we will be participating in school wide coding activity. Below you will find information about this program.

Raz Kids

raz-kids.com

Above is the website for Raz Kids for you to use at home. Raz Kids is a great tool for daily reading minutes. As kids grow as readers the texts get harder and require you to complete quizzes to check on comprehension skills too. Below are log-ins for each homeroom. Let us know if you have any questions.
