Harmony Tigers...Changing Trends!
A Message from the Principal
Dear HSS Parents and Guardians,
I know we are all busy with our hectic schedules, but I would like to dedicate some time to my parents and enjoy a cup of coffee or tea with you. Also, I would like to use that time period to listen to you and hear your valuable feedback about effective ways to continue our growth, improve our school and to discuss current and additional programs for our students.
The Coffee Talks will be every other week with one grade level at a time. Please join me for the first Coffee Talk which will be with our Kindergarten parents/guardians on Wednesday, November 15, 2017 at 8:15 am. I hope to see you on that day.
Thank you,
Mr. Mehmet Subas, M.Ed.
Principal | Harmony School of Science - Austin

HSS-Austin Clubs Spotlight!
Spanish Club
Dia de los Muertos is a holiday celebrated in Mexico and by Mexican Americans in the United States and Canada. The celebration includes gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died. People decorate their homes and home altars with sugar skulls, marigold, candles, incense, and pictures of the dead. They leave offerings of food for the spirits. They visit and care for the graves of their dead relatives and ancestors.
in our Spanish Club with the guidance of Mrs. Cruz, students learned 10 Facts about the holiday:
1. It is absolutely not a Mexican Halloween.
2. It is not celebrated in all of Mexico.
3. It is not a depressing holiday.
4. There is significance behind the "calavera" or sugar skull face painting.
5. The celebration is not just one day, but multiple days. (November 1st honors the the children who have died.) (November 2nd honors all the adults who have passed away.)
6. The Marigold flower is the special flower for the holiday.
7. A very symbolic altar honors the dead person.
8. "Pan de muerto" or "bread of the dead" is round and symbolizes the circle of life.
9. "La Ofrenda" is the prepared items that the deceased enjoyed the most.
10. The holiday is an indigenous tradition.
