We've Outgrown the Scholarship Binder. What does that mean?
There are SO many scholarships & opportunities that we had to move them into a Scholarship Box. You can tour the new box in the Guidance Department and check out the MANY scholarships inside. I think that you will find it to be much easier to navigate.
With Spring Break around the corner and a little extra time on your hands, make sure to come pick up a few scholarships before you go on break.
Calling All Artists
Anyone interested in submitting art to be considered for the program cover for Awards Day and Graduation must do so by March 31, 2017. These programs will be keepsakes for years to come- what a great way to leave your mark at AHS!
Criteria For Design
Must be original artwork (no clip art)
Must be a detailed drawing
Must include the eagle and graduation year
Draw on 1/2 sheet of paper (8 1/2 x 11 folded in half)
Drawing must be appropriate size

FAFSA Individual Meetings
Last chance to meet with Karlton Stephens from the North Alabama Center for Educational Excellence. He will be available to meet with parents and/or students to assist them in filling out the FAFSA. Meetings will take place every thirty minutes from 1 pm- 4 pm. Please try and get both the student and parent FSA ID prior to meeting with him. Directions to do that are listed below. You will need a copy of the student (if they have one) and parent(s) 2015 taxes and W2. If you have any specific questions prior to meeting, please call the NACEE office at 256-350-6478.

All scholarships and special opportunities will be listed here in chronological order.
- Huntsville Hospital Athlete of the Year Scholarship Program is taking applications. From September to April, a panel of judges selects one Athlete of the Week. Applicants must be a high school senior, have a minimum GPA of 3.5 and display a history of athletic and academic accomplishments, as well as community/civic involvement. All weekly winners are invited to a banquet held in their honor in May, and two students are selected as Athletes of the Year. The two Athletes of the Year each receive a $1,000 scholarship. - The University of Alabama Rural Minority Scholarship Program will provide 10 incoming freshmen from rural backgrounds that have an interest in the health care profession a head start in the college preparation they will need for admission to professional programs. Seniors must have a minimum 21 on the ACT to apply. Applications are available in the Guidance Department. Deadline is March 1, 2017.
- The Alabama Association of Secondary School Principal's District Eight Scholarship is available to students with an ACT of 22-28. Other factors to be considered are extra-curricular activities, honors, awards or leadership positions, community, church or related activities and employment. Applications are available in the Guidance Department. Deadline is March 10, 2017.
- The Alabama Home Builders Association awards scholarships to students who want to pursue a career in the core trades of the home building industry, whether through trade school, junior college or four year colleges. Examples of these trades but are not limited to: carpentry and cabinetry, masonry, HVAC/HVACR, plumbing, drafting, electrical engineering and electrical work. Scholarship applications are available in the Guidance Department or online at www.ahbfoundation.org. Deadline is March 15, 2017.
- The F.A.I.T.H. Initiative invites seniors to apply for the Bobby Bodiford Memorial Scholarship and the Dr. Constance Dees Memorial Scholarship. Two or more undergraduate scholarships are available annually. Criteria to apply is a 3.0 GPA, evidence of volunteering, reside in North Alabama, accepted into a college, university or tech school and have a demonstrated financial hardship. Applications are available in the Guidance Department. Deadline is March 18, 2017.
- The Executive Women International Scholarship Program is open to high school seniors. Applicants must have demonstrated financial need, a 3.0 GPA and community involvement. Award levels vary. Only one applicant per school. Sign up outside of Mrs. Smith's office if you are interested. Deadline is March 22, 2017.
- The Alpha Delta Kappa Gwen Hick's Scholarship is a $500 scholarship for a high school senior planning to be an Education major in college. Sign up outside of Mrs. Smith's office if interested. Deadline is March 22, 2017.
- The YNOT Foundation Scholarship is available to seniors with a 2.5 GPA or higher. Applications are available in the Guidance Department. Deadline is March 24, 2017.
- The Jessica Michelle Elkins Love, Live, and Laugh Memorial Scholarship is available to graduations seniors with a minimum GPA of 2.5 and also have a need for financial assistance. The scholarship will be awarded in the amount of $2,000. Applications are available in the Guidance Department. Deadline to turn into Mrs. Smith in Guidance is March 24, 2017.
- The James Ferman & Wiletta Elmore Scholarship does not have a minimum GPA but is intended for students who have a financial need and who have the ability to perform college work. The amount of the scholarship is $750. Applications are available in the Guidance Department. Deadline to turn into Mrs. Smith in Guidance is March 24, 2017.
- The Roy Bolton Patton Jr. Scholarship Endowment Fund will award a scholarship in the amount of $1,000. It is intended for students who have a financial need and who have the ability to perform college work. Applications are available in the Guidance Department. Deadline to turn into Mrs. Smith in Guidance is March 24, 2017.
- The Joe B. Broadwater Memorial Scholarship will award a $1,500 scholarship to a deserving Athens-Limestone County graduating senior. This scholarship is available only to students attending Auburn University in the Fall of 2017. Applications are available in the Guidance Department. Deadline to turn into Mrs. Smith in Guidance is March 24, 2017.
- The Martin Endowed Scholarship is available to students attending one of the following schools in the Fall of 2017: Auburn University, Calhoun Community College, University of North Alabama, University of Alabama- Huntsville, Alabama A&M University. The amount of the scholarship for 2017 will be determines upon review of the applicants. Applications are available in the Guidance Department. Deadline to turn into Mrs. Smith in Guidance is March 28, 2017.
- The Michael David Goldberg Memorial Band Endowed Scholarship is available to any senior band members. The amount of the scholarship is $500. Applications are available in the Guidance Department. Deadline to turn into Mrs. Smith in Guidance is March 28, 2017.
- The Rotary Club of Athens, Alabama will award two (2) $4,000 scholarships to deserving Athens-Limestone County graduating seniors. There is no minimum GPA but is intended for students who have a financial need and who have the ability to perform college work. Applications are available in the Guidance Department. Deadline to turn into Mrs. Smith in Guidance is March 28, 2017.
- The Limestone County Sports Hall of Fame will award two (2) $3,000 scholarships to deserving Athens-Limestone County graduating seniors. There is no minimum GPA but is intended for students who have a financial need and who have the ability to perform college work. Applications are available in the Guidance Department. Deadline to turn into Mrs. Smith in Guidance is March 28, 2017.
- The Limestone Area Community Foundation will award a $1,500 scholarship to a deserving Athens-Limestone County graduating senior. There is no minimum GPA but is intended for students who have a financial need and who have the ability to perform college work. Applications are available in the Guidance Department. Deadline to turn into Mrs. Smith in Guidance is March 28, 2017.
- Family Security Credit Union's scholarship program is available to graduates of 2017. Two $1,000 scholarships will be awarded to aide with college expenses. Applications will include a 750 word essay regarding the importance of establishing and maintaining good financial habits. Information cards are available in the Guidance Office or go to www.myfscu.com for more info and applications. Deadline is March 28, 2017.
- The Y.O.U.T.H. Friendship Foundation Inc. Annual Scholarship Award is available to all graduating students in Madison & Limestone Counties. Financial Need is strongly considered. Applications are available in Guidance Department. Deadline is March 31, 2017.
- Great Clips, Inc. is sponsoring the GREAT Scholarship Program for students interested in pursuing a cosmetology career. A total of $100,000 is scholarships ranging from $250- $15,00 a piece will be awarded. Go to www.greatclipcareers.com/scholarships to apply. Deadline is March 31, 2017.
- The ALFA Foundation is awarding 100 scholarships worth $1,000 to students attending an Alabama college, university or technical school. Applicant must have 2.5 GPA and be a current member of the Alabama Farmers Federation. Application details how to become a member. Go to www.sholarsapply.org/alfa to apply. Deadline is April 1, 2017.
- The North Alabama Educators Credit Union is making available two scholarships- one $1,500 and lone $750. Students in Madison, Morgan and Limestone County are eligible. Applicant must have an account with NAECU. Applications are in the Guidance Department. Deadline is April 1, 2017.
- The Athens Garden Club will award a $1,000 scholarship to a deserving high school senior planning on pursuing a degree in Horticulture, Agriculture or another field. While Horticulture and Agriculture are nor required, they are preferred. Other characteristics considered are academic excellence, community service high school honors and activities. Applications are available in the Guidance Department. Deadline is April 3, 2017.
- The Vietnam Veterans of America will be offering two $500 scholarships to graduating students in Limestone County. Applicants must be direct descendant's of a Vietnam era veteran (active duty). Students must have high academic achievement and evidence of leadership ability. Applications are available in the Guidance Department. Deadline to apply is April 6, 2017.
- The Athens Chapter 214 Order of the Eastern Star Scholarship Program is available to seniors planning on attending Calhoun Community College. The requirements are a minimum 2.5 GPA and a 16 or higher on the ACT. The scholarship amount is $500. Applications are available in the Guidance Department. Deadline is April 10, 2017.
- The Limestone County Farmer's Federation sponsors one $1,000 scholarship. Student, parent, or guardian must be a Limestone County Farmer Federation member. Applicant must have a 2.5 GPA. Scholarships are renewable is applicant maintains a 2.5 GPA or higher. Applications are available in Guidance Department. Deadline is April 14, 2017.
- The Athens-Limestone Education Retirees Association is soliciting applications from high school seniors intending on pursuing a bachelor's degree. They will award two $1,000 scholarships to Athens City and Limestone County Schools. Applications are available in the Guidance Department. Deadline to turn into Mrs. Smith is April 15, 2017.
- Morris, King & Hodge Law are sponsoring three scholarships in the amount of $2,000, $1,200 and $1,000 to students in Alabama. Applications are available at www.mkhlawyers.com/scholarship. Deadline is April 21, 2017.
- The 2017 Student-View Scholarship Program is offereing $11,000 worth of scholarships to high school seniors who plan to attend a four-year college, community /junior college or career school. No minimum ACT or GPA. Applications are available at www.student-view.com. Deadline is April 22, 2017.
- The Limestone County NAACP Scholarship is open to seniors with a 2.5 GPA or higher. Maximum for each scholarship is $500. Applications are available in the Guidance Department. Deadline is April 22, 2017.
- The Jentzen Caleb Risner Superhero Memorial Scholarship was created to honor the memory of Andrew & Lauren Risner’s son, Jentzen Caleb Risner, who lived on this Earth for only 3.5 days. This scholarship exists to honor Jentzen’s memory and to reward students who have fought through life challenges all the while achieving success in high school. Students who have overcome a serious illness or other type of life challenge are encouraged to apply for this scholarship. Applicants must have a 3. 0 GPA and plan on attending a 2 or 4 year school. Applications are available in the Guidance Department, in Mr. Risner's room. Deadline is May 2, 2017.

OTHER OPPORTUNITIES for 9th -12th GRADES
- The University of Alabama’s Rural Health Scholar’s Program is available to 25 11th grade students in the state of Alabama. The program pays for all expenses including tuition, housing, books and meal allowance. Requirements are a 21 on the ACT, a resident of rural Alabama for 5 years, currently in the 11th grade with a 3.0 GPA, 2 letters of recommendation and a statement of interest essay. Applications are available in the Guidance Department. Deadline is March 15, 2017.
The Emperor Science Award initiative is a unique mentoring opportunity designed to engage 10th and 11th grade high schools students curious about exploring careers in science, specifically around cancer research and care. Winning students will be awarded the opportunity to work with esteemed scientists on a rewarding, multi-week cancer research as well as a Google Chromebook and $1,500 for expenses. Entries will be accepted from January 10 through March 17, 2017. Visit the Guidance Department for more information.
- The Greater Limestone County Chamber of Commerce developed the Athens-Limestone Youth Leadership Program. Students selected will learn more about team building, community service, health care, local & state government, cultural arts, business & industry, job shadowing, education, and agriculture. Rising 10th & 11th graders can apply. Students are chosen through an application & interview process. Applications are available in the Guidance Department. Deadline is May 1, 2017.
- Auburn University's Summer Bridge Program is for underrepresented students entering in fall 2017. The program is of no cost to the student. The Office of Inclusion and Diversity hosts students of all majors. That application can be accessed at https://cws.aubaurn.edu/diversity/pm/see. Deadline is March 7, 2017. College of Sciences and Math host math, science and pre-professional majors. That application can be accessed at https://www.auburn.edu/cosam/departments/diversity/summerbridge/index.htm. Deadline is March 10, 2017. The Alabama Power Excellence Program hosts engineering majors. That application can be accessed at http://www.eng.auburn.edu/admin/aep/summer-enrichment/index.html. Deadline is March 10, 2017.
- Have you ever dreamed of becoming a scientist? Make that dream a reality this summer at Duke Summer College. Whether you want to study black holes or the human genome, we have a course for you. For a full list of the classes we are offering this summer, click here.
- The University of Notre Dome Summer Scholars Program will be held on campus June 24- July 8, 2017. 300 Rising high school juniors and seniors will have the opportunity to explore one of 20 diverse fields of study. To find out more information, visit the website at www.precollege.nd.edu.
- The Federal Service Language Academy will take place this summer at the University of North Georgia. Students have a choice of learning Arabic, Chinese, Russian, German, Korean, French, Japanese or Portuguese. You will also learn about federal service careers where knowing a critical foreign language and culture is important. This opportunity is available to rising 10th, 11th & 12th grade students. - The University of Alabama in Huntsville will host a summer Reading Skills and Speed Reading Program for preschool- high school age students. Call 1-800-964-9974 to register.
NEED A TRANSCRIPT?
All schools that you apply to will require that you send an official transcript which must be sent directly from Athens High School. Most scholarships will require a transcript as well. The Transcript Request Form is located in the Guidance Department or on the AHS Website. Turn the form into Mrs. LL Smith (outside the door) or Ms. Ramona Malone.
Please allow ample time for the transcript to be processed.
NEED A RECOMMENDATION?
- Look at the recommendation criteria. It will be specific in who the recommendation can come from.
- Choose someone with whom you've had a positive relationship.
- Provide them with a resume, what or who the recommendation is for, and when you need it completed.
- Let them know if it is to be returned to you or if they are to mail it. If they are to mail it, please provide them with a stamped, addressed envelope.
- Give them ample time to write the recommendation. A month before the deadline is preferable.
