What is an Assignments Due Date (ADD)?
An Assignments Due Date is not a new concept at Georgia Virtual School. Although we provide your student a calendar with daily assignments, the assignments are not actually counted late until after the assignments due date. The due dates occur every other Friday. Work not submitted by midnight is counted late.
This added flexibility allows your student to work ahead or take a few days off without any penalty to their grade, as long as the assignments are turned in before their assignments due date.
Can your student complete all of the work that is due during a 2-week period the day before or the day of the due date? Theoretically, sure they can. There are many reasons why this is not a good idea. They are outlined below.
- Problems that may arise have no time to be worked around. Technology is unpredictable.
- Your student has no time to read my feedback and react to it. I may suggest an additional resource for reinforcement of a concept, request an improperly submitted file to be resubmitted, or even allow a student to resubmit an assignment correctly. All of these scenarios hinge on the resubmitted work being turned in before the due date.
- Inevitably, work turned in at the last minute is rushed, sloppy, and many times, incorrect.
- Students working at the last minute tend to skip content that is not graded. There are many activities, notes, videos, and sites that are an integral part of the course. These are the resources that teach the concepts to the students. When students are rushed, they tend to skip these parts of the course. Unfortunately, this often shows in the caliber of work that is then submitted.
Use your calendar as a guide. Help your students pace themselves!

Parental Involvement
Help your student carve out time to work exclusively on his or her online assignments. Give them the space and the organizational tools to be successful! Plan ahead for at home labs to ensure that the basic supplies are on hand.
Plans for Fall Break?
GaVS does NOT have a fall break. If you are making plans for a trip or just a break from school, students must work ahead in their GaVS courses to ensure that work is not submitted late. Our next holiday is Thanksgiving week, November 24 - 28.
Parent Auditor Account
Have you checked your student's grade lately? Are you receiving the SchoolCast phone call every week? Did you know that you have a Parent Auditor Account?
If you need help with your account, try the GaVS KnowledgeBase. This account allows you to access your student's grade, see how often they are logging in and for how long, see which content they are accessing, and much more. You will need your student's date of birth and GTID to successfully set up an account.
I grade work within 72 hours (3 school days) of when it was submitted. So, grades are constantly being updated. The most telling time to view grades is after an Assignments Due Date. Always read feedback to see what your student missed or how they can work to improve their grade.
