Dear Fifth Grade Parents,

Thank you all for coming to Parent Night and for your classroom donations! It is always so wonderful to partner with you in helping to make this school year your child's best yet! We enjoyed chatting with you and taking a walk through a typical day in 5th grade!

Curriculum Corner

In math we are just wrapping up unit 1 and will be testing soon. Please keep an eye out for a study guide! Soon our classes will start unit 2, which covers adding and subtracting whole numbers and decimals. We will also practice rounding and review place value. Please make sure students consistently practice their basic facts. We still have many students that are counting on their fingers or don’t know their multiplication and division facts. It's very important for these facts to be mastered as concepts get more difficult.

Language Arts (ELA)

In language arts we have just begun guided reading groups and will soon begin researching for our Genius Hour projects. We have been talking about “theme” and point of view in shared reading. Students will also be writing another short narrative about their hidden talents. We will even having a “Doodle For Ideas” contest! Students will share how they generate their writing ideas and create a logo to go along with it.

We are just about finished with our pendulum investigations, where students learned the shorter the string, the more swings a pendulum will make in 15 seconds. We will soon be starting lifeboat investigations. Students will learn about capacity and will change variables to see how they affect how many passengers a lifeboat can hold. It’s amazing how much our students enjoy playing in the water! ☺

Social Studies

In social studies our students have studied the seven different Native American cultural regions. They have learned what adaptations the different tribes have made to help them survive in their region. Next we will learn about why Europeans left for the New World.

Books We've Read
