A message from the Superintendent
Weekly Communication
March 23, 2023
Dear PV Families,
In recent months, there have been concerns expressed to district administration regarding content in select library resource materials. The concerns have been connected to sexually explicit content in the books and those questioned to date are listed in the table below. When a book raises questions for a parent, he/she can request a re-evaluation of the book. The re-evaluation process includes informal and formal parts and is outlined in an administrative regulation attached to Policy 109 Resource Materials. All of the books listed in the table below have moved through a full re-evaluation process or been requested for re-evaluation and subsequently withdrawn from the process before concluding. The re-evaluation of a book involves a committee of PVSD administrators and teachers reading and discussing the book based on Policy 109 and then submitting a recommendation to maintain it in circulation or remove it from the library. The results of the re-evaluation processes to date are noted below.
When clicking on the link to Policy 109 Resource Materials, you will connect to BoardDocs where all Board policies are housed. Additionally, you will see the administrative regulations attached to Policy 109. Many of the District's policies include administrative regulations. These serve to assist our staff and the public in knowing how policy is upheld.
Based on applicable Board policies, parents have the the right to preclude access to select library books by their child(ren). Anyone wishing to preclude access may contact their school librarian. The identified book title(s) will be incorporated into the respective child's library record for reference when needed.
Do not hesitate to reach out with any questions.
Sincerely,
Dr. Barbara A. Russell
