A Word From Mrs. Loor
It's National School Counseling Week! I want to take moment to give a big shoutout of appreciate to Ms. Audino, our school counselor. Ms. Audino is one busy lady! She is in and out of classrooms, in the lunch room or out at recess, meeting with students, and working with teachers and parents on strategies on how best to meet the social-emotional needs of our students. Thank you for all your hard work, Ms. Audino!!
Our fifth graders have been busy too! This past week, Mrs. Polles' and Ms. Ciccarelli's students met with their kindergarten buddies in Ms. Khalif's class via Google Meet to teach them new learning from their most recent science unit. The fifth grade students prepared their own material including diagrams, definitions, and images to teach the kindergarteners about food chains in different ecosystems. Then the students worked collaboratively to create food chains of their own on a shared Google Slideshow. All fifth graders will be going to BizTown on Wednesday as a culminating field trip for their financial literacy unit.
On Thursday, we will be treated to a special performance by members of the Summit High School band, choir and chamber orchestra. In honor of Black History Month, students will be learning about notable African-American scientists, inventors, athletes, political figures, etc through the morning announcements and various classroom lessons over the next couple of weeks.
Please below for more news from the library and the counseling department.
Have a great week!
With Warmest Regards,
Mrs. Loor

What an amazing couple of weeks for celebrating reading, and all the thanks goes to the PTO for sponsoring such great events!! We wrapped up January with our Book Fair, where it's always a joy to see students get so excited about BOOKS! They found favorite authors and fun, new titles. Thank you to all the parents who coordinated and volunteered their time.
On Friday, all classes spent time getting to know Max Brallier, author of The Last Kids on Earth, Eerie Elementary, and the Mr. Shivers series, through a virtual author's visit. After hearing his stories all week long, our students wrote really thoughtful questions. Max Brallier's answers not only taught us more about the writing process, but how much fun being a successful writer can be! He helped everyone see the storyteller within us.
Finally, if your student is a Battle of the Books participant, please check the Google Classroom for important updates.

REMINDER:
As students, teachers and parents look forward to celebrating Valentine’s Day with parties in the classrooms, we ask that you keep our district’s nutrition policy and Franklin School’s everyday emphasis on healthy eating in mind. Please DO NOT attach any type of candy or food items to your child’s classroom Valentine’s Day cards.
Valentine candies are hazardous to many of our Franklin students who have food allergies and other dietary issues. Many candies, even those without nuts, are made in facilities that process nuts, and run the risk of cross contamination. Please note, in order to maintain a safe and inclusive environment for all Franklin students, any cards with candy or food items attached will NOT be distributed.
There are many creative and fun alternatives to candy and sweets for both cards and class parties. Stickers, small erasers, and pencils are excellent substitutes should you wish to attach something extra to your child’s card.
For health-related questions or concerns, please contact Mrs. Zanelli, our school nurse. Her email is azanelli@summit.k12.nj.us. You can also visit the Summit Public Schools Virtual Health Office for additional information.
