Counselor Connection
November 2023

DID YOU KNOW...?
- We are 50 days away from Winter Break!
Presidential elections always occur in November but do you know why?? It's for the farmers. Not wanting to disturb the planting, growing or harvest seasons, the month of November was chosen as the most logical month for everybody to be able to vote.
Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
The FAFSA is a necessary requirement for all students seeking Federal and State financial aid for higher education in the United States. This application determines how much financial aid a student is eligible to receive from the government based on need, and often, students are required to fill out the FAFSA when applying for private scholarships and grants.
The FAFSA form has not been released yet. We anticipate the application will be available sometime next month. In the meantime, parents and students can apply for their FSA ID. You will need to create an FSA ID before you can file the application (both parents and students need their own individual FSA ID). This is a great way to get started on the application process.
Here is a PDF with more information on FSA IDs.
Students, parents and families should watch their emails for notification from the counseling office regarding the release of the FAFSA application.

Work-Based Learning Message from Dr. Tice
Our college-level work-based learning class (WBL100) at ADM is progressing very nicely. This class provides opportunities to increase awareness of career options, explore careers and workplaces, and get a start in students' careers with "learn and earn" programs. Students will receive one college credit for successful completion of the class. Our first assessment covered topics such as: My Career Planning Involvement, Self-Assessment, Career Exploration, Career Planning Satisfaction, and My Academic Strengths activity.
Through this basic information, students are now exploring all of the tools needed to compete in the world of work. Within this work, they will complete a professional cover letter and a two-minute sales pitch. In class, we will continue to work on developing a professional image and practice business etiquette, practice workplace skills of understanding, cultural sensitivity, adaptability, collegiality, empathy, and polite behavior, demonstrate the ability to create a resume and cover letter and continue to grow in public speaking skills.
As we begin to inch towards the end of Semester 1, it is time to begin thinking about learning opportunities for Semester 2. We will be offering a second work-based learning class second semester. This course is designed to assist students in developing the skills necessary to obtain employment, and to learn and practice the skills and attitudes required for job success. Students will practice resume writing, job application completion, and interviewing techniques. Additionally, students will practice workplace problem solving strategies, and demonstrate skills required to work in a diverse environment. DMACC work-based learning courses help students find their next step toward a rewarding career. Successful completion of WBL110 is worth 2 college credits.
If you are interested in more information regarding either of these work-based learning courses, please email Mrs. Gill-Carreon or Mrs. Rebel, or stop into the ADM High School counseling office.
Other very important things:
If I have not visited with your Senior, please have them see me before December 1st. Let’s start making plans for after high school. If your Senior already has plans, have them come and share the great news with me. If you would like to meet with me, just reach out and we’ll get it scheduled. ADM Class of 2024 rocks!
Let’s make dreams come true. Together.
With kind regards,
Dr. Patricia Tice
