Jag E-NEWS 4.2.20
FBISD Schools are currently closed through May 4, 2020.
JAGS ARE ON THE MOVE!
Parents,
In our efforts to communicate clearly and effectively as we gear up for this new learning experience, feedback and reflection are critical. We received some excellent feedback from parents and students since sending the last parent email message:
- A better explanation about the purposes for the two seemingly different schedules (the purple Middle School Online Learning schedule and the blue Office Hours and Virtual Conferences schedule). See the added section titled "Online Learning Schedule Information"
- Parent supports for logging into and using Schoology, the primary platform with which students will engage in their online work. This is a crucial part of the parent experience for online learning, as Schoology allows parents to view what their children are doing, and more. Aids are also added for logging into Skyward Family Access. See the added section titled "Schoology Information"
- Student Technology Supports - In case students need assistance with password issues, logging into Schoology, etc., we have provided some extra visuals, tools, and job aids for them in this section
Online Learning is new for most of our students, and we appreciate parent support as we get started and into a routine. It is a good idea to talk to your child about organizing themselves and their materials and finding a quiet place to work. Keeping a calendar (digitally or in a planner) with due dates, etc. This will not only help them stay on top of their work, but will practice an important skill needed for high school and beyond- organization!
As our FBISD students begin their online learning, we ask that you proactively discuss appropriate online engagement expectations while using personal or district devices to engage in their virtual lessons. FBISD will continue to monitor acceptable usage and technology violations as outlined in the FBISD Student Code of Conduct. District expectations regarding technology usage can be found here.
I know I speak for the entire SMS Staff when I say that we hope your family is safe, healthy, and happy. This unprecedented time is a huge challenge for everyone, but please know the Jaguar Family is here to help however we can. If you need any assistance, do not hesitate to let me know. Thank you in advance for partnering with your child’s teachers to help continue their first class, quality FBISD education online. Please let your Jag(s) know I look forward to “seeing” them online as I check in on their Online Learning.
And last...be looking for an important announcement from our fantastic Counselors below. They are organizing a resource for students related to their counseling services.
If you missed our message earlier this week, please click here to see how much we miss you. Be sure to mark your calendar and participate in our virtual fire drill on Tuesday, April 7th!

Online Learning Schedule Information
Middle School Online Learning Schedule - Starting April 3, 2020
Beginning tomorrow, April 3, 2020, SMS teachers will begin posting content lessons and assignments for students to complete. Lessons/Activities will be posted for the week to allow for flexibility in your child's schedule, but we do ask that lessons/assignments are submitted to teachers when they are completed.
Example: On Mondays, students will have work posted by their ELA, Math, and Social Studies teachers. Assignments will be designed to take no more than 30 minutes per subject. On Tuesdays, students will have work posted by their ELA, Math, and Science teachers. Assignments will be designed to take no more than 30 minutes per subject. Science and Social Studies have alternating days, and Electives are on Friday.
In these asynchronous experiences, there may be instructional videos to watch, a collaborative item, such as a discussion prompt to respond to, and a brief assessment so that the teacher and the student may track progress--all within the 30 minutes allotted for that subject. Engagement in these asynchronous experiences is expected of all of our students. The purple schedule below shows how each week is organized.
- PE/Health/Kickstart: See website resources & videos, and the items your teacher places into their Schoology folder
- Non-HS Credit Electives: Teachers will post online learning activities to support students. Instruction and completion of these online learning activities will not exceed 30 minutes per week
- CTE Courses for High School Credit: May require additional instructional time per week due to course requirements.

TIPS from the TEAM
As we are working towards our new normal, we thought we would send you a few resources and you can view the FBISD Behavioral Health & Wellness page. The first link is for parents/students to watch together. During this difficult, confusing, and frightening time, Mike Smith, the host of The Harbor™ by Jostens, takes to the crate to acknowledge the challenges we are all facing during the COVID-19 pandemic and related restrictions. Mike issues a call to action for all of us, in this unprecedented time, to find ways to build community, take care of one another, and stay rooted in love.
The second resource is for adults—any adult in your family that is helping your children adjust to a new normal. It is from Dr. Becky Bailey of Conscious Discipline. Her guidance is best when working with students who are learning to self-regulate their emotions. Dr. Bailey has great, practical advice. Often, when just reading a short section of her article, you can find a new tool to put in your toolbox. I hope that you will find something new too.
Connect using Schoology
As we are transitioning to online/virtual learning, besides regular emails, Schoology is the district platform that Counselors will be using to communicate with our students. We have each created a Schoology group as a way to not only connect with our students, but to also provide resources, guidance lessons, hold virtual conferences, and offer other forms of support.
Please encourage your student to join their grade level Schoology group:
