Welcome Back, Pirates!
I hope this newsletter finds you well.
As we gear up for the upcoming school year, this newsletter contains important information about our upcoming Back to School Nights along with some information regarding Fall Sports and Supply lists.
We have enjoyed meeting our new Barry families at New Student Enrollment this past week. If you have any questions about anything around the start of school, please don't hesitate to reach out to me or our great office staff.
Have a wonderful weekend!
Back to School Nights
We are so excited to welcome our students into the building! Our Back to School Nights will give an opportunity for students to get schedules, drop off medications, add money to lunch account, request schedule changes and tour Barry. A change from last year is that school pictures will not happen during this night but will occur at the end of August during the school day.
Incoming 6th Graders - August 9 from 2-6 PM
Incoming 7th Graders - August 10 from 2-6 PM
Incoming 8th Graders - August 11 from 2-6 PM
Incoming 5th Graders - August 17 from 5-6 PM
What to do during Back to School Nights:
Show proof of immunizations (as needed).
If your student is new to Barry, stop by the Health Room to visit with the nurse if your student has any health concerns.
Provide medications to the school nurse, as necessary.
Provide proof of residency (if not completed over the summer).
Get your student’s class schedule (if immunizations are up to date & proof of residency was provided) and find your classes.
Drop off money (cash or check) for your student's lunch account (optional).
Update student's school records with any changes which may have occurred over the summer.
Enroll in Chromebook Insurance.
Pick up Free and Reduced Lunch Application Paperwork
Pick up information for Character Strong, Live School and Activities
Meet with PTSA
Please do not bring school supplies for this night because not all teachers will be here and not all classrooms will be open.
If you’re unable to attend on your child’s designated day or you have multiple children attending Barry, you can come on any one of the days.
Notes from the Nurse:
8th Graders - Required Vaccinations
The state of Missouri requires that all incoming 8th-grade students be vaccinated for Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis) and MCV (meningococcal) prior to starting their 8th grade school year.
All 8th grade students who cannot provide proof of having the Tdap and MCV being given will not be able to start the 2022-23 school year. Students will NOT receive their schedules at back-to-school events and will NOT be able to start on the first day of school next year until proof of the vaccines being given is provided.
Please reach out to our school nurse with any questions (thomask@platteco.k12.mo.us).

COUNSELOR'S CORNER
REPEAT: Meet our new counselor, Amanda Griffin!
Hello! My name is Amanda Griffin and I will be your counselor this year. I live in the Northland with my husband Scott and our four kids. Most of the time you'll find me cheering on my kids in their sports endeavors but I also love hikes, concerts, and shopping at Target. I played soccer at Florida State University (Go Noles!) and still love working out and all things sports. I taught 5th grade for 8 years and this will be my 5th year as a school counselor. I can't wait to start my journey as a Platte County Pirate!!
Look for more information to come from Amanda in later parent bulletins. For now, you can reach Amanda at griffina@platteco.k12.mo.us or at (816) 436-9623 ext. 3105.
THE SOCIAL WORK SCOOP
REPEAT: Meet our New Social Worker, Sarah Mays!
Hello! I am Sarah Mays and I will be the new social worker at Barry School. I am happy to be part of the school community and I am looking forward to meeting the students and families of Barry School. I want to join forces with you to make this an incredible school year filled with learning, adventure, and discovery.
I am a Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) with clinical experience in psychiatric treatment and community mental health. I spent 6 years in child welfare with the Missouri Department of Social Services followed by another 7 years in Special Education with NKC Schools. I have facilitated group therapy in an intensive outpatient program and also worked on a psychiatric hospital unit. Most recently, I was a clinician providing mental health services to five KC Metro school districts.
I earned my Bachelor of Science degree in Child and Family Development from San Diego State University and my Master of Social Work from Arizona State University. I grew up in California but have lived in the Northland since 2006. My most important role is being a mom to a teenage boy. In my free time, my favorite thing to do is spending time with my family. I enjoy being outdoors, biking, camping, boating, sports, exploring new places, traveling, and visiting warm climates. The beach is my happy place!
I am passionate about people, making connections, and advocating for others. My office will be a warm and friendly space where students are encouraged to be themselves. Students and families are faced with various challenges and I want my office to be a safe haven where we can work together, problem solve, and celebrate the victories.
I am eager to get started at Barry School, establish some roots, and build relationships with each of you.
I can be contacted by phone at (816) 436-9623 ext. 3121
My email is mayss@platteco.k12.mo.us
