RISE News for the Week of August 21
Rise Families,
I met with your students today for our weekly check in. Today, students were given their PAWS for being ahead of the BLoD and no red areas, for setting and working toward goals in Summit, and for participating in a fall sport or activity. Setting the goals in Summit is an easy way to earn PAWS, yet some students resist doing this. Encourage them to use this tool and be proactive about the BLoD! Also remind them that I can help with papers of just about any kind, college planning, and other academic needs. If I can't help them, I will find someone who can!
Mrs. Gilbert
Here is your weekly message from Mr. Lyons!
Things are really rolling at FHS. Students are working hard at passing focus areas and projects. Some students are starting to experience the push to stay ahead of the BLoD (blue line of death). Once it passes them, they are playing catch up. MOST of the first Power Focus Areas in Summit will turn red this week, if the student has not passed the assessment for that focus area. Here are a few strategies that you can discuss with them to help them make sure they keep up with the BLoD.
Students should be making a plan for their week in their PLP on Mondays for the 7 hours they have in the LAB. They should be choosing the focus areas and the plan they will follow to master that focus area before they test in the weekly calendar in Summit.
THEY NEED TO TEST! If they do not pass the assessment in the LAB the first time, they will need to study more, specifically on what they missed and prove it by showing notes, flashcards, diagrams, etc to the LAB instructors before they can test again.
Students MUST use all of their LAB time and RISE time studying and preparing to take assessments. If they don’t they will fall behind. That is the only time dedicated to working on their Focus Areas. It is their PLT (Personal Learning Time)
To stay ahead of the pace (or ahead of the BLoD) it’s expected students work at least 30 minutes a day outside of school. This can be done on their own computer at home, on a computer at the Public library, or studying the notes, flashcards, etc they have created while on their computers at school.
If students are falling behind and need more help, and/or more time on their computers, FHS will start having ESS on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. More information coming soon.
Students can drag the Blue Line across their focus areas and projects to see what day the BLoD would pass it, so they have a date to shoot for.
Students should be working on Power Focus Areas as well as Focus Areas. They need to be working on them as the year progresses and not wait till the end of the year to pass them all. These focus areas gives students an additional 9% on their grade.
I will share more pointers on Summit in upcoming email updates. If you have questions, let me know.
