Shrove Tuesday
What is Shrove Tuesday?
It all begins with Shrove Tuesday (also known as Pancake Day) which is the last day before the period which Christians call Lent and it is traditional on this day to eat pancakes. This is the season in which Christians get ready for the sacrifices and fasting ahead. Christians make a special point to review and modify their Lenten plans and also focus on their lives, asking God what improvements they can make in order to move closer to Him.
Why are Pancakes eaten on Shrove Tuesday?
Lent is a time of abstinence, of giving things up. So Shrove Tuesday is the last chance to indulge yourself, and to use up the foods that aren't allowed in Lent. Pancakes are eaten on this day because they contain fat, butter and eggs which were forbidden during Lent.
When is Shrove Tuesday (Pancake Day)?
Shrove Tuesday is celebrated the day before Ash Wednesday and is therefore the final day before the commencement of Lent, leading up to Easter Sunday. Shrove Tuesday always falls 47 days before Easter Sunday. This year it is on Tuesday, February 16.

Below is a recipe for pancakes for you to make as a family.
Shrove Tuesday Pancake Family Recipe (shared by Mrs. Noel)
In a large bowl:
1 /2 cup flour
1 /2 cup rolled oats
1 /2 teaspoon baking soda
1 /2 teaspoon baking powder
1 /2 teaspoon salt
Take turns measuring the ingredients in a large bowl. Each person can stir with a whisk and count to ten.
In another bowl:
1 egg
1 tablespoon vanilla
1 tablespoon maple syrup
2 tablespoons oil
1 cup buttermilk
Combine the wet ingredients by stirring with a whisk. Each person can count to 40! Add the wet ingredients to the bowl with the dry ingredients. Mix until blended with the whisk. If the batter is too thick, add a little more buttermilk. Each person counting to 30.
Let the batter rest (sit on the counter not go to sleep)! Ha Ha!
Cook the pancakes on a hot griddle. Turn over when your bubbles form. Add toppings of your choice (Examples: whipping cream, fruit, syrup, yogurt, chocolate chips).
ENJOY:)
