Understanding Proficiency-based Learning in Brewer

Proficiency-Based 101 Introduction: This will be the beginning of a three-part series on proficiency-based education for parents of Pre-K through Grade 12. Our sessions will cover the following:

1. General Overview of Proficiency-based Learning and the State Statute January 16 6 PM

2. Brewer School Department's Curriculum and Classroom Teaching Practices February 13 6PM

3. Grading and Reporting Practices in a Proficiency-based Learning System March 13 6 PM

These sessions will be held at the Brewer High School Lecture Hall for 45 minutes. Snacks will be provided.

Brewer Community School "Unpacks" Our School Department Vision

Recently our teachers had a professional development day where we discussed the components of a proficiency-based learning system. In this system, there are four main components. They are: a shared vision that drives our change to improve our educational system for all our students; strong leadership at all levels within our organization; proficiency-based learning where learning targets, instruction, assessment, and reporting are aligned; and a culture that fosters continuous improvement always striving for excellence.

The 7th-grade teachers, Sarah Estes and Tom Burby, took their learning from this important early release day and incorporated student voice into this system allowing for greater understanding in our proficiency-based learning system by the students. The students "unpacked" the Brewer School Department Vision statement and defined what it meant to each of them.

Our vision states that the Brewer School Department will be an innovative learning community preparing students to reach their full potential as leaders, learners and critical thinkers in a complex and changing world. The teachers brought this statement to the students and asked them to define what these words meant to them. Students defined "reaching full potential", "a complex and changing world" and "innovative learning community".

Please click on the links to see what the students had to say for each of the phrases. They really are quite intuitive and it is very interesting to see how the students see the world they will be living in as adults. By understanding and discussing the future world, the students were able to see how important their education is in developing citizens that can be productive and valuable members of society in the future. Proficiency-based learning is more than demonstrating knowledge of learning targets in content areas. It is also about becoming critical thinkers, a clear and effective communicator, and a person that can solve problems in a world that continues to change.

Fall 2017 Athletic Wrap Up

The Fall 2017 Athletic season ended on November 3 when Brewer Football, along with the cheerleaders, traveled to Skowhegan for the Class B North semifinal playoff game. The Witches came up on the short end of the scoreboard, however, played a hard-fought contest against the eventual regional champion, Skowhegan Area High School.

In all, the fall season was considered a successful one for Brewer High School. Each team that competes in MPA “Heal Point” activities qualified for postseason competition. The Field Hockey team earned their first post-season victory in an estimated 20 years with their Preliminary Round victory at Old Town High School. The field hockey team also earned the MPA Sportsmanship Award for Class B North, as voted by the divisions 14 other schools.

The girls cross country team finished third in Northern Class “A” with a strong crew of runners this year. The soccer teams had excellent regular seasons, with the girls earning a trip to #1 Presque Isle. The Witches dropped a tight match to the eventual regional champion up in Aroostook County. Our golfers once again competed at the top of the Class “A” north region and missed out on the state competition by one spot.

The addition of Volleyball at Brewer High School was a positive one as 22 girls went out for the team, including 10 student-athletes who had never participated in a fall activity before. The season was positive for these players, and the 20 returning players are eager to continue the progression of the program as we will compete in the MPA Heal Points, and hopefully postseason tournament, next fall.

The Brewer High School Student-Athlete Advisory Council conducted a Veterans Day Food Drive and it was a major success. In all, approximately 1,000 non-perishable items were donated to the Brewer Food pantry just in time for the Thanksgiving holiday. Around 50
student-athletes went door to door in selected neighborhoods to collect items and a drop off point was established at Brewer High School to accept donations. This was a very well received event by the community and an effort all should take pride in.

The Brewer Community School continues to offer inclusive interscholastic educational athletic opportunities to students in grades 5 through 8 in the fall. 2 boys soccer team's, 2 girls soccer teams, 2 field hockey teams and boys & girls cross country were accessed by around 100 students at the Brewer Community School. Cross Country is offered to 5th graders, while the other activities are offered solely to 6th through 8th graders.

Proficiency-based Grading and Reporting at Brewer High School

What is Proficiency-based Grading?

Proficiency- based grading is a grading system that evaluates student performance on objective criteria (a.k.a learning targets). Learning targets, as informed by the Maine Learning Results (MLR) and/or the Common Core, spell out what our students should know and be able to do when they graduate from high school. In a proficiency-based grading system, a student’s grade is determined by his or her performance on the individual standards or learning targets.

Proficiency-based Grading and Reporting System:

Policy IKA, discusses Brewer’s philosophy regarding our grading and reporting system. The purpose of the Brewer School Department grading policy is to establish a set of guiding principles that all district educators will use to establish a system of grading that fairly, clearly, accurately, and consistently communicates student learning progress and achievement.

Purpose of Grading and Reporting:

The purpose of grading is to measure student success and communicate progress toward meeting the standards of a course. "Assessment for learning” means that assessment is used to tailor our teaching plans and our teaching style to better help students achieve the standards in our classrooms. Not all kids learn the same nor do they learn in the same amount of time. Grading should never be used to threaten or punish, but rather to accurately reflect student progress toward meeting the standards and to provide information and feedback to parents and students. The grading practices of teachers should be transparent and public and verbal or written progress reports should be shared with students often. The goal should be to help students feel they have earned, rather than been given, the final grade. Our grades will:

1. provide students information about where they are in their learning continuum so that they can succeed as learners.

2. provide teachers information so that they can target the specific needs of their students.

3. provide parents and other stakeholders information about where students are in their learning so that they can ensure students’ continued growth and attainment of future goals.

Academic Grading:

All grading and reporting practices at Brewer High School will reflect the following design characteristics:

1. The primary purpose of the grading system shall be to fairly, clearly, accurately, and consistently communicate learning progress and achievement to students, families, postsecondary institutions, potential employers, and other relevant stakeholders and audiences.

2. The grading system shall be designed to ensure that students, families, teachers, counselors, advisors, and support specialists have the detailed information they need to make important decisions about a student’s education.

3. The grading system will measure, report, and document student proficiency against a set of clearly defined cross-curricular and content-area graduation standards developed by the administration, faculty, and staff of Brewer High School.

4. The grading system will measure, report, and document academic progress and achievement separately from habits of work, character traits, and behaviors.

5. The grading system will ensure consistency and fairness in the assessment of learning, and in the assignment of scores and proficiency levels, across students, teachers, assessments, learning experiences, content areas, and time.

6. The grading system shall not be used as a form of punishment.

As we begin to implement our proficiency-based grading system with our 9th graders this year, the philosophy around grading practices is for all students within our system. We realize that students learn in different ways and in different time frames. Children should be given multiple opportunities to demonstrate their learning and their grades should be reflective of their academic progress, not a one time high stakes test score. Veterans Remembered at Brewer Community School and High School

BCS Project Wall of Stars

"Project Wall of Stars". The idea was to make our hallways come alive, colored by yellow--with an abundance of stars mostly in our student's own handwriting honoring parents, grandparents, brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, cousins, other family members, friends and neighbors who have served in our nation's military. Families contributed by completing the star(s) that were sent home for a veteran or current active duty military personnel with their name, rank, branch of service/mission, and dates and returned them to their child's teacher. We want to thank you for helping us recognize our dedicated men and women during Veteran's Day, Saturday, November 11th. Please see the picture below of the "Wall of Stars".

BHS Veteran's Day Breakfast and Assembly

Our annual Veterans Day Celebration was held on Thursday, November 9th. Coffee hour began at 7-8 and breakfast was served from 8-9. The assembly started at 9 with the annual marching in as the band played welcoming in all branches. This day at Brewer High School is about celebrating our Veterans and learning about our country and the sacrifices that others have made so that we are able to lead the lives we currently have. We also salute those that currently serve and protect us on a daily basis. Please see the assembly events below and all of those that participated. We thank our presenters for their time and for sharing their experiences with our students, faculty, and community during this assembly.

AFJROTC Inspection Day Arrives!

On November 6th, the Brewer High School Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFJROTC ME-20071) was evaluated by the directors of this high school citizenship program, the Holm Center in Alabama. The evaluator used a comprehensive 52-item checklist to ensure compliance with Title 10 United States Code, Department of Defense and Air Force Instructions, and the Memorandum of Agreement with the Brewer School District.

The 56 students in the Cadet Corps rose to the occasion on the rainy Monday morning. All of the 19 items in the checklist directly pertaining to cadet performance were scored as “Meets Standards”. Of those 19, 9 were rated as “Exceeds Standards”, including the 30-Step Drill sequence, participation in school and/or community support events, and most importantly, cadet “ownership” of Cadet Operations.

On Dec 18th, cadet leadership put together a 15-minute recruiting event at the Brewer Community School. The Top-3 ranking cadets provided some info on the program followed by a drill demonstration comprised of 9 second-year cadets and a Push-Up Crew demonstration where 8th graders were allowed to participate and receive an AF baseball hat. The Cadet Corps is already planning presentations for BCS and sending school Step-Up Days next semester.

Dress and Appearance standards and Community Service are cornerstones of the program. The cadets have already accomplished 756 hours of community service to include Wreaths Across America and the Festival of Lights Parade.

Fun opportunities are also available for the cadets. These include Color Guard and Saber Teams, Aero Club, and new this year, Air Rifle Team.

BCS Lego Robotics Raising the Bar

Congratulations is in order to the Brewer Community School 4th-6th grade, First Lego League team the Lego Legends. At the November 18th qualifying tournament in Augusta the team received the TeamWork Award for their ability to collaborate, problem-solve and motivate teammates. The Lego Legends then advanced to the Maine State competition on December 9th. This team has applied hard work and a lot of brain power into this year’s educational theme of Hydrodynamics. Brewer Community School team members are Zachary Arnold, Cooper Charette, Riley Vittum and Aimon Anderson. For more information on FLL: www.firstlegoleague.org.

STEM Education: The Impacts of Our New Program

Stem Pathway 1: Principles of Biomedical Course by Arthur Libby

The Principles of Biomedical Engineering course is an immersive problem-based learning environment where the students take on the roles of various medical professionals as they work collaboratively to determine the cause of a mysterious death. We began the course by examining and documenting a crime scene and then analyzed much of the evidence such as blood typing, time of death, blood spatter and DNA forensic analysis. We are now examining the medical history of the person looking deeper into such illnesses as diabetes, sickle cell anemia and heart disease. Each of the topics has an extensive lab component with problem-solving elements that use the engineering design process. I really enjoy teaching this course and have found that the extensive content knowledge is presented in a relevant and engaging framework. I can not wait to see how the rest of the year unfolds.

Stem Pathway 2: Introduction to Engineering Design by Grace Gonnella

The Introduction to Engineering Design course focuses on students learning the steps of the design process, through instant challenges. Following this unit, students learned multiple types of technical drawings to prepare them for the coming unit on CAD (Computer Aided Design) software, used in engineering. The instant challenges immerse the students in the problem solving, teamwork and constraints that engineers face.

Here are what some of my students have to say about the course:

Stem Pathway 3: Introduction to Computer Science by Grace Gonnella

The Introduction to Computer Science course uses MIT app inventor with block-based programming to build apps for a phone or tablet. The block-based coding approach removes the complexity form the syntax of other text-based programs as students learn what and how coding works. The students and I have enjoyed the diversity in the apps that are created, from making a guessing game that serves single and multiplayer to creating a database of interview questions and even planning how many pizzas for a party. The students focus on what an abstraction and an algorithm are in the code as they move from activity to activity. Our next unit will be using python, a text-based programming language. The students need to focus on the importance of the user by creating a user story which gets further broken down into actionable features to be done in a sequential and prioritized list that will be included in the app, to ensure the app does what the user wants. This reminds the students that coding is not just about what they can do, they also need to remember that there is a user who will be buying the product to finance their projects.

Welcome to Our New Hires 2017-18

Tyson Bailey - Ed Tech I

Tyson graduated from Wiscasset High School in 2003 and attended the University of Maine Augusta as a Public Administration major. After graduation, he worked as a substitute teacher for the Brewer School Department before becoming a full time ed tech at Brewer High School this past summer. During his free time, he has worked on, performed, and/or directed over a dozen theatrical productions for several theater companies in mid coast Maine. He lives in Orono with his wife, Erin of South Berwick.

Vicky Bennett - BCS Noontime Aide

Vicky graduated from Wisdom High School in 1988 and the University of Maine in 1992 with a Bachelor's in Early Childhood Development. She worked as an Ed Tech for several years after graduation before becoming a full-time stay at home mom. During her free time, she mentors the high school robotics team, enjoys skiing, camping, and traveling. She lives in Brewer with her husband, Everett and children, Drew and Abigail.

Tammy Bouley - Ed Tech I

Tammy graduated from Wisdom Middle/High School in 1988. She attended Hallmark Institute of Photography. She has worked at St. Agatha FCU, Town of St. Agatha, and Foster Care. Tammy moved to Bangor in 2014 and missed working with children and found Brewer School Department to be a perfect fit. Tammy lives in Bangor with her husband, Leo of 25 years and has a 21-year-old son, Shawn.

Shane Boyes - MELMAC College and Career Pathways Specialist

Shane graduated from Wiscasset High School in 2011 and went on to complete two years at Southern Maine Community College in the 7-12 Education program before transferring to the University of Maine at Farmington. He graduated with a BA in Psychology in 2015 and continued on to study Student Development in Higher Education at the University of Maine. Shane earned his M.Ed. in 2017. Shane is now the College and Career Pathways Specialist at Brewer High School, a unique position supported by BHS, Jobs for Maine’s Graduates, and the MELMAC Education Foundation. Shane lives in Old Town with his wife, Madeline and cat, Paulie.

Ellen Brochu - Ed Tech III

Ellen graduated from the University of Maine with a Bachelor’s degree in elementary education and a Master’s degree in special education. Ellen has been a special education teacher for 24 years working in several area school districts. Currently, Ellen is working for the Brewer School Department as an Ed Tech III in Title I at Brewer Community School. Ellen lives in Orrington during the academic year, and summers on Vinalhaven Island. She has been happily married to her husband, Joe, for 28 years.

June Burtt - Ed Tech I

June taught second and third grades for 29 years, most recently in Glenburn, Maine. Working with students, her focus was in Cooperative Learning and preparing students to be successful citizens. June retired from teaching in 2015, but has come to realize she still wants to help students. She looks forward to being an Ed Tech at Brewer Community School.

Debra Carey - Office Assistant to Food Service/Facilities Director/Guidance

Debra graduated from Old Town High School in 2002. She has been a substitute in Milford and Old Town schools for 3 years, before being hired on at the Brewer High School. She works within multiple departments in the school helping each one stay organized with various needed projects. She currently lives in Milford with her husband Jason and has 2 daughters, Elizabeth and Allison.

Karen Cole - Ed Tech I

Karen currently lives in Brewer and has two beautiful daughters. She graduated from Mount View High School in 1992 and went on to obtain her Associates degree in Early Childhood Education at Hesser College in New Hampshire. After obtaining her degree, she moved back to Maine and has worked in the Bangor area child care facilities with the last ten years as a teacher at Penquis. She is excited for her new adventure as an Ed Tech I with the Brewer Community School.

Allison Cote - Special Education Teacher K-4

Allison graduated from Brewer High School in 2013. She attended Waynesburg University in Pennsylvania as a dual Early Childhood and Special Education major. Allison cheered in both high school and college wearing orange and black proudly all eight years. Currently Allison lives in Brewer with her dog and cat. She is excited to come back to New England after being in Steelers country for 4 years!

Colleen Courbron - Secretary to Pupil Services

Colleen was born and raised in Orange County, CA and graduated from Orange Coast College in 1997 with a degree in Communications. Her husband Craig is the Curriculum and Technology Director for the Lower Yukon School District in Mountain Village, AK. She currently lives in Glenburn with her two dogs, Nikita and Vladimir, and despite living in Maine since 2008, is still unpleasantly surprised when it snows.

Sara Flagg - Ed Tech I

Sara graduated from Bangor HIgh School in 1995. Sara attended the University of Maine Augusta with a B.S. in Mental Health and Human Service. After staying home with her children, Sara recently taught preschool at ABC Preschool in Brewer. With four children ages 12, 10, 8, and 6, she has regularly volunteered at Brewer Community School over the years. Sara lives in Brewer with her husband, Scott and their children. Sara is excited to be working at BCS as an Ed Tech.

Grace Gonnella - STEM Teacher

Grace graduated from the University of Maine in 2013, with a B.S. in Biology. Grace immediately began the Masters of Science in teaching program at the University of Maine. Through the Master's program she did an internship at the Jackson Laboratory where she worked hands on with mice researching infertility. She began teaching 9th grade Earth Science at Penobscot Valley High school and 8th grade Physical Science at Hichborn Middle School in Howland. She is currently the new STEM teacher at Brewer High School, teaching Introduction to Engineering, Computer Science, and AP Physics. She currently lives in Old Town with her fiance, David, her horse Nevaeh, and 25 sheep.

Jeffrey Gordon - Biology Teacher

Jeffrey graduated from the University of Maine in 2007 with a BS in Elementary Education. He earned dual M.Ed. degrees in Educational Leadership and Curriculum, Assessment and Instruction and is pursuing his Ed. D. in Leadership from the University of Phoenix. Jeffrey has been teaching for 9 years here in Maine and in South Korea. He currently lives in Millinocket with his wife Ryann, his son Tyson(11) and daughter Taelyn (4).

Melanie Hall - Grade 2 Teacher

Melanie graduated from the University of Maine with an Elementary Education degree in 1997. She spent the last 14 years as an Ed Tech in the special education department in Brewer while raising 3 children. Now that the nest is empty, she can pursue her dream of teaching, starting this year in Grade 2 here in Brewer. Melanie lives in Carmel, and enjoys music, reading, and spending time with her children and their spouses.

Crystal Jackins - World Language Teacher

Crystal graduated with a BA in French from the University of Colorado at Boulder. She studied a year abroad in Bordeaux, France. She studied one summer and taught two summers at a French Immersion program at University Sainte-Anne, Nova Scotia, Canada. She also taught one year in Sonora State in Mexico. This is her 28th year of teaching French and Spanish; mostly in the Bangor area. She is a highly qualified teacher in both languages. Crystal will be working in both the Brewer High School and Brewer Community School. She lives in Newport on Sebasticook Lake with her two dogs. She has two sons and one grandson. She is an advanced scuba diver, an artist, karate instructor, a carpenter, and lumberjill on the side!

Cassandra Johnson - Ed Tech I

Cassandra graduated from Hampden Academy in 1991 and attended EMCC in 1993 for business. She completed the CNA program at UTC as well as phlebotomy. She has also worked in Hermon from 2000 till 2010 subbing and tutoring. She has 2 daughters, Mikele who graduated from Brewer and Abigail who is a senior this year. She currently lives in Brewer.

Cindy Johnson - Food Service Assistant

Cindy graduated from Brewer High School in 1978. She worked at ZF/Lemforder for 22 years, until they closed in 2009. She attended Beal College in Bangor and graduated in 2012 with an Associate's Degree in Early Childhood Education. After graduation she became a substitute teacher with Penquis, remained there for 2 years until hired for Food Service Assistant position in Brewer. She then worked for 1 year as a Food Service Assistant with the Bangor School Department. She now returns back to Brewer as a Food Service Assistant. She currently lives at Brewer Lake in Orrington with her husband.

Haley LaGrange - Kindergarten Teacher

Haley graduated cum laude from the University of Maine in 2016 with a Bachelor's Degree in Early Childhood Education. She spent her summers working for various children's camps in Maine, holding positions such as counselor, Administrative Aide, and Assistant Director. In 2016, she held an Officer position for Kappa Delta Pi, Honor Society in Education, while working as a Lead Resident Assistant in the first year Residence Halls. Upon graduating, she worked as a Substitute Teacher in Veazie, Old Town, and Orono. She now resides in Hampden.

Lori Marseille - JMG Specialist

Lori graduated from Ellsworth High School in 1987 and attended University of Maine graduation in 1993 with a B.S. in Business Management. After graduation, she became a sales manager for Rent-A-Center for 2 years before taking a Business teaching position at Penobscot Job Corps. Lori remained there for 10 years, until deciding to take some time off to be a mom. After 6 years of substituting and taking care of the home, she took a position as a Title I Instructor at Caravel Middle School. She remained there for 7 years, until taking her current position as a JMG Specialist at Brewer High School. She lives in Hermon, ME with her husband and three boys.

Sarah Moore - Occupational Therapist

Sarah graduated from Brewer High School in 2012, played softball and field hockey all 4 years. She attended Husson University and graduated with a Bachelor's in Health Care Studies in 2016, and a Master's in Occupational Therapy in 2017, while playing softball her freshman and sophomore college years. Sarah did her last clinical at Brewer Community School in the spring of 2017 and was hired as a new OT in June 2017. Sarah lives in Brewer with her husband Jacob, her new baby boy, Ezekiel, and their two dogs.

Andrea Morin - Special Education Teacher Grades 5/6

Andrea graduated from the University of Maine, Orono with an undergraduate degree in Communication Science and Disorders in 2006. She currently is a graduate student at the University, achieving a master’s in Special Education. She has worked as an ed tech at the Southern Penobscot Regional Program for children with Exceptionalities for 7 years. After that, she was an ed tech at Indian Island School. She is beyond excited for her new adventure as a special education teacher at Brewer Community School for grades 5 and 6. She is honored to be a part of the community she grew up in.

Erin Nadeau - Speech/Language Pathologist

Erin graduated from Brewer High School in 2011 and graduated from the University of Maine in 2015 as a Communication Sciences and Disorder major. In 2017, Erin earned her Master's in Communication Science and Disorders. Erin lives in Holden with her fiance Evan Nadeau. She enjoys hiking with her dog Luna, in her free time.

Lynne Nelson - Food Service Assistant

Lynne and her husband recently purchased a 13-acre homestead in Eddington, Maine where they plan to operate a small family organic farm. They are in hopes to raise pigs and chickens and an extensive garden for their family needs. She moved to the area to be closer to her children and 2 grandsons. She retired from School District 68 in Dover-Foxcroft in 2011 with 29 years of service. Her career ranged from classroom ed tech, school secretary and finally to working as district Accounts Payable Clerk and School District Food Service Director. Her career offered many opportunities for learning, growing and understanding school dynamics. Since her retirement, she has been “G” (Grammie) to her 6-year-old grandson. He has entered school which opened some time for her to seek employment. She is glad to re-enter the workforce. This part-time position as Brewer Community School Food Service Assistant is a perfect fit for Lynne giving her time to still be "G" and be involved with a school again. She hopes to be helpful with her abilities and she is thankful to be a Brewer Witch.

Ryan Pelletier - Ed Tech I

Ryan attended the University of Maine at Farmington and graduated in Secondary Health Education. Ryan has taught all over the country in all grade levels. He has also coached several soccer teams. In his spare time he enjoys traveling, surfing, fishing, and a good meal.

Nola Perry - Food Service Assistant

Nola graduated from Hermon High School in 1971. She has had several jobs over the years including a CNA and a PCA and has cooked in a nursing home. She has 2 grown children and 8 grandchildren. In her spare time, she likes gardening and has 4 raised beds each year. She then does a lot of canning from what she grows! She also likes sewing, cooking, camping and fishing. Nola lives in Brewer and feels very lucky to be hired by Brewer High School as a Food Service Assistant.

Amy-Jo Pierce - Ed Tech III

Amy-Jo graduated from Eastern Maine Community College in 2005, with an Associate's degree in Early Childhood Education. After graduation she worked in the childcare field for many years, then as an Ed Tech for five years at RSU 22 until being hired as an Ed Tech at the Brewer Community School. She lives in Hampden.

Taylor Pierce - Grade 2 Teacher

Taylor graduated from the University of Maine in 2010 with a degree in Elementary Education. After graduation she became an Ed Tech at the Veazie Community School for 1 year before accepting a grade 3 teaching position at the Suzanne M. Smith School in Levant. She remained there for 6 years until being hired to teach 2nd grade at the Brewer Community School this year. Taylor lives in Brewer with her husband.

Frank Rapp - IT Technician

Frank graduated from Brewer High School in 2000. He attended Husson University and graduated in 2005 with a degree in Computer Information Systems. He has been working in the IT field since 2006. He has worked at both local hospitals in the Bangor area. He enjoys playing golf and basketball. He lives in Hermon with his girlfriend Barbara and his three step-daughters Kayla, Kristen and MacKenzie and our daughter together Brookelyn. So, yes, all girls!

Alecta Rhoads-Doyle - Grade 4 Teacher

Alecta graduated from UMaine with a B.A. degree in Speech Communication and Certification in Elementary Education. She continued her studies at UMaine and received a Master's degree in Literacy. She has taught Grade 1 in Brunswick, Maine, Grade 3 in Ellsworth, Maine and was a Reading Specialist in Bangor, Maine. She lives in Holden, Maine with her husband and two sons. Both sons attended Brewer High School. She enjoys running and biking with her family and two black Labs, Jack and Annie.

Terry Riddle - Nurse's Aide (LPN)

Terry graduated from Waynesboro High School, Waynesboro, VA in 1983. She joined the Army in 1984. She graduated from Riverside School of Practical Nursing in Newport News, VA in 1992. She received the Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Medal, Army Achievement Medal and an Army Service Ribbon. She was honorably discharged from the Army in 2011. She then lived in Williamsburg, VA and then moved to Virginia Beach, VA where she worked in the VA Beach schools as a Clinic Nurse. She also worked for the US Army National Guard as a Family Assistance Specialist. Her husband Darryl is Active Duty Air Force and as a family they transferred to Maine in 2016. She lives in Orrington, ME with her husband Darryl of Staunton, VA, daughter Danielle and her husband Chris, and son Alex. Her daughter Kaylyn and her husband Zachary are stationed at Ft Dix/Maguire in NJ. As a Licensed Practical Nurse and retired veteran, Brewer is lucky to have her!

Randy Rockwell - IT Technician

Randy graduated from Southern Aroostook Community High School in 1994. He attended North Point Bible College for 4 years with a major in Pastoral Ministries. He moved to Lincoln in 2001 and became a special education ed tech. He then moved to the IT world in 2012 for 4 years and was hired as an IT Tech in Brewer. He lives in Woodville, Maine with his wife Heather and 3 kids.

Carolyn Seidl - Ed Tech I

Carolyn graduated from Bucksport High School in 1979. She started working as an ed tech when her kids were in school. She has over 25 years experience as an ed tech working in Bucksport, Orono and Brewer. She lives in Bucksport with her husband Walter. She has four children and ten grandchildren.

Brent Slowikowski - High School Principal

Brent is an Eastern Maine native growing up in Howland and graduating from Penobscot Valley High School. After a 20 year career in broadcasting and community relations, Brent began his education career teaching English at Hermon High School. He also served as Assistant Principal at Hermon for five years before being hired as Principal at Central High School in Corinth, where he worked for three years. Brent has two grown children--a daughter who lives in Bangor and a son who lives in Alaska--and three grandchildren. Brent lives in Bangor with his wife, Monica, and their great dane, Dory.

Danielle Stuber - Ed Tech I

Danielle graduated from Brewer High School in 1995. She attended the University of Maine in Orono and graduated with a B.S. in Elementary Education. After staying home with her two boys, she began volunteering at BCS on a regular basis. Once her youngest started kindergarten, she taught Pre K at a local preschool. She lives in Brewer with her husband Brett and sons, Jack and Luke. She is excited to be working as an ed tech at BCS.

Julie Vinson - Title I Teacher

Julie graduated from University of Maine Farmington in 1996 with a BS in elementary Education. She then graduated in 2009 with Masters in Education from Thomas College. She spent the next 14 years in RSU20 teaching kindergarten, grade 2 and Title I. She joined RSU 25 in 2012 as a Grade 3 teacher, before relocating to St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canada for three years while her husband worked on the shore side for an offshore drilling company. Upon returning stateside in 2016, she returned to RSU 25 as a fourth grade teacher until being hired to become the new Title I Teacher at Brewer Community School. She currently lives in Brewer with husband Aaron and son Nicholas.

Alex Wilbur - American Sign Language Teacher

Alex graduated from UMO in 2002 with an Education degree. He also, attended USM for Linguistics/ASL in 2006/2007. He has spent the last 8 years working in Farmington for RSU 9 using his sign language skills. He is excited to start his career here at Brewer teaching ASL I (2017-18 school year) and ASL II (2018-19 school year) to help our students meet the world language proficiency-based learning targets to earn a diploma. He currently has six full classes of American Sign Language at Brewer High School.

Brianna Wilder - Grade 3 Teacher

Brianna went to school in her home state of Illinois for 2 years and then transferred into the University of Maine in 2014 where she graduated with an elementary education degree in December 2016. She then substitute taught in a variety of grades in Brewer Community School. She is a busy bee and enjoys visiting her home state, traveling, exploring Maine and being with friends and family.

Ashley Worcester - Ed Tech I

Ashley graduated from Madawaska High School in 2002. She attended Husson University for 4 ½ years as a Psychology/Clinical Major and minored in Biology. She worked in the Mental Health/Behavioral Health field for 9 years. She also worked at Atlantic Home Health for 2 of those years and Care & Comfort for the remaining 7 years as a staffing supervisor. She then took 2 years off to be with her children and began substituting in January of 2017 at Brewer Community School. She lives in Brewer with her husband and two children.
