EPSD9 Hosts English Learner Listening Session at White Mountain Middle School
On Tuesday, December 7th, EPSD9 hosted a parent listening session for English Learner and migrant families at WMMS. There were approximately 120 parents and family members in attendance from all of the District 9 k-12 schools. The Eagle Point District 9 Leadership Team joined the session as well.
The event consisted of small group sessions with specific focus questions to better understand how EPSD9 can support students and families. Questions included social emotional needs, how to better the ELD program, and what do parents and families need from staff members. Non bilingual staff members were able to listen via electronic interpreting equipment.
Staff and families felt the night was very successful and enjoyed the opportunity to participate in conversations. Staff was able to gather valuable information and new perspectives directly from family members.
High School Students Gear Up for Welding Certification
On December 15th, eight high school students will take part in an all day hands-on test to obtain a state recognized welding certification. Trevor, Hunter and Kaden are 3 of the students who will be participating in the upcoming exam. This opportunity is offered through the Eagle Point High School Engineering Program and provides students the chance to gain the skills needed to access welding employment options.
In Oregon, certified welders are needed in several industries. Careers are available in construction of bridges, fabrication shops, commercial buildings, manufacturing and aerospace applications. There is also a wide range of alternative career paths that require welding training and certifications.
Trevor, a senior at EPHS, has already received one welding certification. Trevor shared that he is currently utilizing his certification with a local employer and prefers the welding work over other limited job choices available to a 17 year old.
Hunter, another senior at EPHS, is looking forward to obtaining the welding certification. He feels the knowledge will be beneficial in opening up opportunities when he graduates. Even though Hunter is not set on being a welder as a long term career, he believes the certification is beneficial to have.
Kaden, a sophomore at EPHS, is the first of his family to know how to weld. He became interested in welding, joined the program and is having fun learning the skill. Kaden has been practicing a lot for the exam and believes that practice makes perfect. He is looking forward to obtaining his welding certification in the near future.

What Does This Mean for EPSD9?
1. Test to stay can ONLY be used for those who are asymptomatic and were exposed while at school, not during community or in-home settings away from the school day. Students participating in sports are not eligible to test to stay because masking is not required in sports.
2. Unvaccinated staff/students can be tested as soon as the "at-school exposure" has been identified. Testing will take place at school using the BinaxNOW Test. EPSD9 must have written parental consent to administer the test; with a second test occurring at school between days 5-7 following the exposure. This allows students to remain at school during their modified quarantine period.
