A bridge to business
PhD holders should not underestimate their value to industry and the business sector, says Peter Fiske.
*Article published on Nature
"I have found across all scientific disciplines that those with doctoral degrees possess many of the skills that are in highest demand in today's economy. If you have earned a PhD, you know, for example, how to analyse data. You also understand how to examine those results to gain insights. In some important ways, you are better prepared than MBA holders to make valuable contributions to the business world. You have learned resilience in the face of uncertainty and with limited resources." Read more.
The Rutgers Postdoctoral Association Needs You! | Deadline: June 29
We are seeking new postdoc talent for the 2018-2019 Executive Board of the Rutgers PDA. The positions available are President, Vice President, Campus Activities Coordinator, Communications Manager, Social Outreach Coordinator, and Liaison to the Postdoc Union (AAUP-AFT).
Check out descriptions of the six PDA officer positions and SUBMIT your application today!
Applications are due by Wednesday, June 29. New Executive Board Members will be announced on July 13.
The Rutgers Postdoctoral Association (PDA) is a volunteer organization that aims to build a stronger and more cohesive postdoctoral community across all departments and campuses at Rutgers University.
The Rutgers PDA works to enrich the experiences of postdocs at Rutgers, and we host a variety of formal and informal events throughout the year, such as the Fall Orientation Lunch and the Spring Postdoc Research Symposium.
Note:
The Office of Postdoctoral Affairs serves as the home for Rutgers PDA, with Associate Director Dr. Chevere-Torres serving in the role of Rutgers PDA Adviser. The office provides logistical support, and guidance for PDA endeavors, initiatives, and activities.
The elected PDA President will be invited to be part of the Postdoctoral Advisory Council (PAC) a small university-wide group of faculty, staff, and postdocs who has an interest in improving the culture, experience, and professional development for postdocs at the University. The PAC works together to make formal recommendations for related policies that will be reviewed/approved by our Executive Steering Committee.
IDP meetings for academic and industry careers | Sign up by June 30
*On behalf of Dr. Janet Alder:
"Dear 4th-6th-year graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and PIs,
The graduate school uses Individual Development Plans (IDPs) to help students stay on track academically and with long-term planning. 4th-year students are required to attend one group IDP meeting according to their future career interest. 5th year and higher students, as well as postdocs, are invited to come if they wish. Faculty are invited to attend as well.
Please pick at least one of the following meetings as appropriate to your interest. There will be different guest speakers at each of the meetings so you may come to more than one but attendance is required at least one of these meetings. If your interests are not in academia or industry in general, then indicate that on the Google doc and I will be in touch to arrange a private meeting with you and a relevant person. This year there was an option of using an iJOBS event to fulfill the requirement for an IDP meeting however if you had not already told me that you used an iJOBS event for this purpose then you should attend one of these meetings this summer.
You must sign up by June 30 for a meeting on this Google Doc
