ACURIL 2020 BAHAMAS
CELEBRATING ACURIL'S 5OTH ANNIVERSARY, JUNE 7-11, 2020

ACURIL PRESIDENT BERTHAMAE WALKER'S INVITATION TO DESIGN THINKING IN LIBRARIES, ARCHIVES AND MUSEUMS: REVOLUTIONIZING THE WAY WE DO BUSINESS
Nassau, The Bahamas
June 2019
Dear Members, Friends and Supporters of ACURIL,
As we approach ACURIL’s 50th Anniversary in the 2020 conference year, we look back with pride of accomplishments, while also looking forward with hope for an even brighter and glorious future for libraries, archives, museums and other information entities within the Caribbean and the region. This is indeed an occasion worthy of celebration. For this reason, ACURIL 2020 BAHAMAS will be held, June 7 -11 at the Beach Hotel, in the Atlantis Resort, Paradise Island, Nassau.
In partnership with regional and international experts and practitioners, ACURIL 2020 will present the theme “Design Thinking in Libraries, Archives and Museums: Revolutionizing the Way we do Business”.
With the concept of “Design Thinking”, Acurileans and other interested professionals will be challenged to become more open to creative and innovative ways to remain relevant in today’s fast paced, digitally driven world.
Participants will also be exposed to an approach which is geared toward improving services in libraries, archives and museums through creative problem-solving, and be able to develop new projects, products and services in different information units for the benefit of All..
The Acurilean conference will present a varied continuing education programme with keynote speakers, special presentations, workshops and research posters by colleagues, coming out from the Call for papers.
The environment promises to bring out a special opportunity to network and exchange new ideas, share knowledge and experiences, and build new collaborative endeavours. The conversation with the different Acurilean Exhibitors will open new opportunities and ventures.
Along with the Bahamian Local Organizing Committee, chaired by Mrs. Dorcas Bowler, I am pleased to extend a personal invitation to you to join us to celebrate our ACURILEAN past, reflect on our future and build lasting and meaningful relationships.
I am looking forward to welcoming you to the Bahamas for a most challenging, collaborative learning experience to continue Connecting, Communicating and Contributing as a strong Community of Practice in the Caribbean region.
Cordially,
Berthamae Walker, Ph.D.
ACURIL President 2019-2020

ON DESIGN THINKING: THE CONFERENCE THEME
"Design thinking transforms how organizations create and develop strategies, processes, services and, of course, their products. It is a human-centered approach to innovation that enables a more effective approach to problem-solving."
— Paige Connor, agencyQ
Understanding how people interact with products or concepts and developing solutions around those interactions is at the core of design thinking. By focusing on the basic human needs and behaviors of the audience, design thinkers immerse themselves in a singular problem to come to an innovative solution.
According to Tim Brown, IDEO Executive, Design thinking is “a human-centered approach to innovation that draws from the designer’s toolkit to integrate the needs of people, the possibilities of technology, and the requirements for business success”.
The process of design thinking is generally understood to consist of 5 key stages: Empathize, Define, Ideate, Prototype, and Test.
- Empathize - Develop a deep understanding of the challenge
- Define - Clearly articulate the problem you want to solve
- Ideate - Brainstorm potential solutions, select and develop your solution
- Prototype - Design a prototype to test your solution
- Test - Engage in a short-cycle testing process to refine your solution
This is a collaborative, human-centric process that allows for the exploration of multiple solutions to a single problem, quickly and effectively. It empowers an entire workforce - not just designers - to question approaches and ideate on a wide range of possible solutions.
