Enrichment September News
Art - Jennifer Ashmore, Art Teacher
In ART class we will be learning about and doing artwork in the style of a different artist each month. This month students will be learning about an artist named Keith Haring. Keith Haring is known for his bold, graphic style of art. Haring began doing chalk drawings in the subway stations of New York City and soon became one of the most popular artists of recent generations. Haring devoted much of his time producing art to promote cultural messages. Haring believed that art can transform the world. Children are drawn to his artwork because of the bright and bold colors and the simple images he made.

Music - Cristen Dimas, Music Teacher
Let’s make some music! In MUSIC class, Challenger musicians practice and develop rhythmic skills, melodic skills and listening skills in age-appropriate, FUN ways. We make and experience music together using singing voices, instruments, movement, children’s books, and games. And we READ music, using visual representation and music notation. Every time students come to class, we: Sing, Move, Play, Listen (like musicians do), and Create!
In September, we celebrate Fall! Your student may come home singing songs or speaking rhymes about crispy leaves, breezes gently blowing, or the different varieties of apples! Pre-K, Kindergarten and 1st grade lessons include the rhythm sticks and egg shakers, and 2nd, 3rd and 4th graders are working on "Bar Basics" techniques to use when playing on the xylophones, metallophones, and glockenspiels.
PE - Bridget Hodge, PE Teacher
We are movin' and grovin' in Physical Education! Kindergarten through fourth grade students attend Physical Education every other school day while preK students attend every four days. Students are required to wear tennis shoes (a shoe that is appropriate for exercise) to participate in PE. For student safety, please communicate medical concerns through a doctor or parent note.
Our September lessons focus on fitness, cooperation, nutrition, locomotor skills, social and group skills, moving safely in shared space, responding to stop and start cues, team building, following procedures, problem solving, resolving conflicts, and personal responsibility. For more information about the P.E. Program, please visit Ms. Hodge's canvas page and feel free to contact her directly (bhodge@conroeisd.net).
