I have been at Student Council advisor here at AHHS for four years. I was also the student council advisor at my previous school.
This is my 11th year teaching. I have taught Spanish, ESL, Special Education, reading. I have also taught from 5th grade on up.
I chose to be an advisor for Student Council cause I wanted to help empower students to make positive change within their campus. I wanted to grow student leadership from within student council, allowing that leadership to matriculate to the entire student body.
I hope that AHHS Student Council can continue to work with other student organizations so that many more student leaders can shine and make positive changes on campus

17 years in Stu. Co.
32 years in Education
I like being involved in all things O'Connor.
I'd like my council to be more involved in the community, not just O'Connor.
Sandra McKinzie
This is my 21st year in student council
This is my 27th year in education
As to why I chose to be an advisor? It chose me when I was in high school. I just knew even then, that I wanted to be a student council advisor. So when my principal called me in to tell me that I would be the next advisor, I said OK!!
I hope to build our council's membership and in turn, build our leadership team. I hope to improve on our traditional projects and implement some new projects!

How many years have you been a student council advisor? 5 - I started at Brennan mid year in 2014 and slowly helped out with the second half of the year. I then picked right up from the beginning of the following year and have not stopped.
How many years have you been in education? This will as well be my 5th year! YAY
And why did you choose to be an advisor? I was in Student Council in High School and I loved every minute of it. It honestly has taught me so many things regarding leadership and organization. My student council sponsor was my second mom as I had no clue what to do with my life. The workshops and training we attended were always so much fun and it created such a network of people for me. To this day I enjoy meeting new people because of Stu. Co.
What do you hope to accomplish this year with your council? I hope to attend nationals later this year. I want our council to win more state recognition through state reports and I want us to be consistent with our Teacher of the Month award which is a recognition we are in charge of!
Daniela Mercado
How many years have you been a student council advisor? This is my third year.
How many years have you been in education? 5 years and all 5 have been at John Jay!
And why did you choose to be an advisor? At the end of my second year I started to want to be more involved with students on campus. I was looking into starting my own club but by a stroke of luck I ended up administering an exam with the StuCo advisor at the time. She let me know that she recently got a department coordinator job at another campus and thought I would be interested in taking over StuCo. Next thing I knew, I was in a van heading to state with them and I was hooked ever since.
What do you hope to accomplish this year with your council? I hope to get better as we are transitioning to a new leadership team this year and I hope to be able to fundraise enough so that we are able to pull off our first annual StuCo Banquet this year. Our goal has always been to include more parents in fellowship type activities.
Martha Blose
How many years have you been a student council advisor? 12
How many years have you been in education? 14
And why did you choose to be an advisor? Did not choose, but the reason I stay is….Student Council is a very diverse group, there is something for everyone to be passionate about.
What do you hope to accomplish this year with your council? A cohesive team where we can work together to accomplish our goals.
