Ohio Association of Student Councils, November 2017
The Ohio Association of Student Councils is an organization dedicated to the teaching of leadership skills, organizational skills, and people skills valuable to the members and officers of all student organizations!
Looking back: Middle Level MADness!
A multimedia presentation with the same theme was shown to all delegates from Motivational Media, a company based in Burbank, California. Motivational Media Founder and President, Jim Hullihan, made the trip all the way from California to spend the day with our students!
After lunch, delegates were divided into small breakout groups for more activities, with the end of the day concluding with a powerful activity. Delegates literally "shredded" the barriers and obstacles that keep them from being their best. With this symbolic finale, OASC sent our young middle school leaders back home with a stronger sense of empowerment!
OASC would like to thank Heather Baker, and the Eastern Heights Middle School Student Council, for being extraordinary hosts for the day! We appreciate all the hard work that went into making our day run smoothly, and providing lunch for all delegates and staff who attended!
We look forward to next year's Middle Level Madness!
Fall 2017 iBELIEVE & OASC Staff Training
Two weekends of staff training were held to get our 209 staff members more prepared for all fall programming! The first weekend was held in Parkersburg, West Virginia on October 7-8th. The second weekend was held in Columbus, Ohio on October 14-15th. The professional development during this series of staff trainings centered on "The Art of Processing" and debriefing experiential learning activities so students can take away valuable and meaningful lessons and skills back to their home schools and communities. Adrian Dennis led the professional development both weekends! A special thanks to Patrick Klein and the iBELIEVE Foundation for funding both weekends of training so staff members were able to attend at no cost.
We look forward to the memories our new staff members will help create for our delegates!

7 Leadership Lessons From the Thanksgiving Table
National Turkey Day is once again upon us. Some people enjoy and others dread the holidays. The food, the family and commercials, all can be a bit overwhelming. But if you can keep your wits about you, the holidays can be a time of fun and learning as well. Here are seven clear leadership take-a-ways to be had this Thursday.
1. Plan well.
Whether you are the host or traveling to see the folks, there are a myriad of potential problems associated with Thanksgiving. Among them are traffic jams, uncooked birds, deep fryer house fires and unforeseen family feud fistfights. Avoid these issues by setting some time aside to think through how the holiday will play out. Spontaneous pleasure works better when you have foreseen most of the obstacles. Make some notes, take some precautions and prepare to have fun.
2. Recruit a compatible team.
You may not be able to control who attends the holiday festivities, but you can choose who is in your direct company. If the gathering is at your house, consider the mix and invite people who you know you can trust and support you.
3. Meet or exceed expectations.
Don't invite a bunch of people over randomly and just expect they'll be thrilled with the standard turkey fare. Think through the experience your guests are looking for. Get their input upon invitation and design the experience accordingly. It doesn't have to be a Martha Stewart affair. Even TV dinners, and big screen can be the perfect Thanksgiving affair for some people. Find out what will make them thankful to you for a great day, and then deliver.
4. Pick your battles.
Great leaders know they can't win every fight. You are bound to get that hated cheek pinch from Aunt Martha or get into that fight about facts with Uncle Charlie despite the availability of Google on your smartphone. Remember the objective is to get through the day with as little collateral emotional damage as possible. Set your limits and only go to war when something critical is at stake.
5. Establish your limits.
Gluttony isn't pretty. And lord knows there will be enough carbs to take down an army this weekend. Pre determine your limits so you can stay sharp and resourceful. That extra helping of stuffing can cost you the time for 3 more workouts next week. Exercise restraint.
6. Help everyone keep perspective.
Senses will be heightened, which makes for a fun holiday. But if things get out of hand, it's your chance to shine with your leadership qualities. Bring in the calm and remind people of all the great benefits of spending time together. Help remind people why they care about each other. If you can resolve family squabbles, workplace conflict will seem easy as pie, pumpkin, in fact.
7. Let everyone see your gratitude.
This holiday has definitely been over commercialized, but there is a core purpose, which is to give our thanks to the forces of nature and the people in our lives for the great bounty of good things bestowed upon us. Everyone has something to be thankful for and most have many blessings to count. Make sure others see how grateful you are for the blessings in your life and help them do the same by your example.

Save the Dates for Summer Workshop 2018!
Save the dates for Summer Workshop now!
OASC partners with the iBELIEVE Foundation to offer 5 different calendar weeks at multiple college campuses of summer workshop programming! Summer workshop is a 5 day, 4 night summer camp opportunity for student leaders in the middle level program (entering grades 7-9) and the senior high program (entering grades 10-12). These summer programs encourage the development of leadership skills, improves understanding of setting and achieving worthy goals, and inspires young leaders to accept challenges and responsibilities, so they may return to their communities with knowledge, convictions and understanding which will empower them to better all they encounter. Our summer programming also facilitates life long connections between student leaders from all over the state of Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and most recently, Kentucky.
We hope you will come to workshop with a desire and the spirit to learn, to try new things, and to share your talents, ideas, and feelings with others. If you do that, we promise you will leave with more information than you ever thought you could remember, with more new friends than you thought you could make, and with a feeling that you can make a positive difference in your school, community, and in the lives of the people you know!
The cost of workshop is $300/delegate. This includes the program materials in addition to room & board for the 5 days at workshop. While scholarships are available, we know this can be a large investment of money for many families - so we want you to start planning now so you can join us in the summer of 2018! Most students describe their experience as unforgettable, life changing, inspiring, motivating and "one of the best weeks" of their lives. We hope to see you at one of TEN workshops being offered!
Registration will open March 1, 2018 - stay tuned for updates!
