The space Race
USSR Vs. America
America was 2nd into space, but 1st on the Moon
Once the USSR launched Sputnik, Kennedy and NASA really kicked the space program into overdrive. The US could not afford to lose to the USSR once again.
WE DID IT!
On July, 21st, 2:56 UTC, Neil Armstrong took the first step ever onto extra terrestrial soil. And even more importantly, we beat the USSR. Neil's famous quote "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind, " still resonates with anyone who hears it, And nothing felt better than defeating the USSR in the race to put a man on the moon.
The cold war
The Space Race was one of the most instrumental parts of the Cold War. Since no bombs were dropped and no bullets were fired, The Space Race was used to show who was better. When American landed on the moon, US morale skyrocketed and USSR morale plummeted. Every single United States citizen was on cloud nine for a while. This was very important in asserting our dominance over the USSR.
