Book Commercials! By Alexis and Karina

This week, we are now starting our book commercials. Book commercials are where we choose a book we want to do a report on, and then we write a script of what we are going to say in the movie. After we write the rough draft, we have to self revise, and then buddy revise. Then, it's time to make our movie! The only thing is, we have to be done with our endangered animal movie before we can start this new project. Book commercials are made to encourage people to read and try new books that they wouldn't normally pick up. If a movie is particularly enticing ( which means very good), more people will want to read that book. The object is to "sell" the book to as many people as you can. A good movie includes a hook, a quote, and maybe a short paragraph from the book. You also need a summary so the reader gets an idea of what the book is about. The only part we don't include in the summary is the ending. Don't want to give it away! Book commercials are fun and a great school project that encourages us to read more new books. We hope everyone in the class tries really hard on their book commercial.

We asked some people what book and who is the main character they are choosing for their book commercial.

Graydon and Brooklynn - The 14th Golfish and the main character is Ellie.

Tamara - Magic Kitten and the main characters are Zoey and Flame.

Karina - Girl Online and the main character is Penny.

Olivia - Judy Moody series and of course the main character is Judy Moody.

Alexis - The Maze Runner and the main character is Thomas.

Logan and Franco - Diary of a Wimpy Kid series and the main character is Greg.

Ford - The Sister's Grimm and the main character is Sabrina.

Ever - Sammy Keyes series and the main character is Sammy Keyes.

The Jamestown story by Logan and Mateo

Jamestown was the first successful English colony, and it was built on May 14, 1607. It was built in 19 days. The boats taken to the new world were called the Godspeed, the Discovery, and the Susan Constant. The Captain of all three boats was a man named Captain Newport. There was also another captain that would bring great leadership in Jamestown later. His name was Captain John Smith All three boats brought more gentlemen than commoners, which is a problem because the gentlemen usually have people do everything for them. Let's just talk about England for a second. There were two classes, commoners and gentlemen, with hardly any people, if not any, were in between. Captain John Smith was going to be on the council of Jamestown but the gentlemen decided against it. Soon, President Wingfield was no longer the president. He had stashed food for himself and let half of the colonists to starve to death!

President Ratcliffe, the president after Wingfield, was even worse than Wingfield. He took more rations for himself and would leave less for the entire colony! President Ratcliffe made a grave mistake at one point, which caused him his presidential identity. He wanted to make a house just for him and he wouldn't have to do squat. He would make everyone make the house for him and he wouldn't do anything. He was fired and Captain John Smith was made the new president. His first law was, "He that does not work shall not eat." Captain Newport left back for England with rocks, hoping that there was gold in them, but when he came back, Jamestown was on fire.

To find out more read the book, Blood on the River. It is an amazing story about how life on edge is, and the words actually bring you there. We hope you enjoy it!

Recess Update By Reif and Maddie

We did a poll on what kids do at recess. Here is what we got from the kids that we asked. Two students in our class play soccer, and some other people play a Minecraft make believe game. There is also one person who plays basketball and he is good at it because he plays almost everyday. There are two people who like to draw a lot and they are really good at it. One of the most popular things is to play four square and also a lot of people like to play football. In my class there is a lot of people who like to play together and I think that is very cool. Another popular thing to play at recess is on the playground and also another thing to keep in mind is that people just walk around. And you’re probably thinking that not very many people like to walk around, you're right, because only 3 people do. So I hope you have some ideas on what to do when you don't know what to do at recess because in my class those things are very popular. Maybe you can try some of these things. Now it’s time for your question, what do you do at recess?

GET SUITED UP FOR THE FIFTH GRADE HOLIDAY PARTY!!! In fifth grade there will be a CRAZY holiday party. Everybody will be in their snug pajamas and along side them will be their blankets and pillows. All the fifth graders will watch the awesome movie, Frozen, which is one of the most popular winter movies. When you watch the movie, you can bring your sleeping bag, stuffed toy, a blanket a pillow and so much more! But, just make sure it is school appropriate! Also there is going to be popcorn, cookies, lemonade and licorice … Mmm … cookies!

Ask Niko! By Mia and Camden

Dear Niko,

People are bullying me and saying that i’m a nothing!

Dear PeopleAreMean321,

If people are bullying you, you should should go to a teacher or trusted adult to handle that problem, and just stay away from those mean birds!

From your favorite bird,

Dear Niko,

In four square people keep pushing me onto the ground so I can’t hit the ball!

Please Help,

Dear SadFace726,

If they are hurting you go to a teacher or aid to help you! If they are not physically hurting you just don’t play four square anymore!

Skyline Lunches By Anna and Brenda

Lately, at skyline school we have been noticing that the lunches are disgusting and displeasure. Anna and I have been seeing that some of the lunches that the lunch ladies make. They are really greasy some foods would be, quesadilla, spaghetti. Also meatballs, cheese pizza. Oh there's more, hamburgers, mini burgers too, chicken wings and the chicken. They sometimes give you stomach aches to!

Some ways we could help our school get better lunches is by raising money.

We could do a bake sale or car wash. Or even a lemonade stand. This will help by getting better kitchen supplies and even better ingredients. Also we could help by getting the student council and some teachers to help the lunch ladies decide what restaurant to get the lunches from.

But, we are not trying to say this school does not have good foods. It also has great foods like, salads, burritos, penne pasta, chips, teriyaki, orange chicken, and the smiley face potatoes. We are not trying to offend the lunch ladies but our school lunches could get a lot better and hey, we should all be willing to help. We can have a job to volunteer to help the lunch ladies unpack the catered food.. We all should be able to help our school get better lunches.

We did top five holidays and surveyed people in our class and here are the results...

And Our winner is Christmas with a whooping 20!

Happy holidays and a have an AMAZING New Year!

(Maryclare) To be honest I didn't think anybody would vote for Easter or New Years.. So I checked why people chose these and here are my results..

Asya: where I come from I get presents on New Years, there is X-Mas but I don't really celebrate it

Olivia: {We were unable to reach Olivia so we do not know why she chose Easter}

Book Review! By Amelia

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone by J.K. Rowling is a thrilling and adventurous book in the magical genre of fiction. And I'm not just saying that; it really is full of adventure and magic! First, Harry Potter, the only escaper of the Death Curse from the darkest wizard of the age, Lord Voldemort (otherwise known as You-Know-Who, He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named, or Tom Riddle), finds out he is a wizard and gets invited to a magic school. His parents died trying to save him from Voldemort. He meets two other kids on the Hogwarts Express on their way to Hogwarts School of Magic and they become best friends. Their names were Ronald Weasly (Ron) and Hermione Granger. Ron is a funny- 11 year old boy - who lives with an all magic family and his parents were in the Gryffindor House too, and Hermione is a booksmart girl who is very affectionate for her friends. They were all sorted into the same House, Gryffindor, meaning they were brave and honest. Later on in the book, Harry, Ron, and Hermione learn more about the Sorcer's Stone, and how you become immortal from it, but Voldemort's guarding it. They finally make up their minds: they will defeat Voldemort and go smash the Stone to smithereens! Find out what happens to them on the way by reading this amazingly told novel (or if you love it so much, you read the whole series, which is seven long books long. I finished them all very recently!!!).

Harry Potter is a VERY famous boy, also called "The Boy Who Lived", because he wasn't killed by the Death Curse, let alone Voldemort! If you love action and adventure, and don't mind a lot of scary and bloody scenes, I think you will enjoy this series. Even if you aren't a fan of dark stuff, this book is so well written that you won't mind it. I think that you'll enjoy this book thoroughly and I highly encourage you to read it.

If you want to know all of the names in the series in number order, then here you go! Read them all!

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

Herry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

Book Review By Graydon

Have you ever thought of never getting old? Well, in the Fourteenth Goldfish, a realistic fiction book, by Jennifer L. Holm, you never get old of the book! In this book the main characters are Raj and Ellie. When they start to become friends, Ellie’s grandfather becomes a 13 year old because he makes the T Melvin, which is a special potion which he tried, using himself as the dummy, and it made him young. When Ellie’s grandfather comes in to live with, she starts bonding with him and her childhood gets a lot more interesting. Then along the way her grandfather’s researches and findings get deleted and he needs Raj and Ellie’s help to get back online with the lab! Later on you will meet Ellie’s dad and he’s really nice and calm, he also doesn't get very annoyed. Also her mom is sweet but could get carried away with her job, a drama teacher. So are you ready for more!?

Think, what if you were them, what would you do and who would you be? ( Raj, Ellie, Ellie’s mom, Ellie’s dad, or Ellie’s grandfather?) Well whoever it is, you’re in good shape. Because all these characters have a great life, even though those lives seem a bit harsh and scary!
