Denmark Digest
April 2022
Welcome to April and to Spring Break.
Please find many highlights throughout this newsletter about events that occurred on our campus in March or events that are scheduled to occur in April. We have many students and teachers to celebrate who are active on our campus and continuously represent Denmark in a positive manner.
I have included information for May testing. We are back to traditional standardized testing guidelines where EOCs count 20 percent of a student's overall course average. Also, for AP testing, exams can only be taken in person and late exams are back to emergency documentation required.
I hope all of you have a wonderful Spring Break.

Bell Schedule Survey for 2022 - 2023 - Feedback Needed
Option 1 would afford our students the opportunity to see their teachers and be in classes on a more consistent basis. Our math and world language teachers believe students would benefit from this schedule. Students are concerned that with only two block periods each week, they may have most on their assessments on those days. Students are also concerned about having seven periods of homework on most nights.
Option 2 is our current bell schedule. This schedule was selected to decrease transition times in the hallways due to COVID. Feedback from students has been that they like the current schedule because they do not meet all classes each day and, therefore, do not have as much homework. Students also state that the classes seem long on block days.

Prom - April 30th
If you would like to bring a guest who attends another school, you MUST have a Guest Permission Form filled out (by the student’s parents and the administration at that student’s school) and turned in to the Front Office by April 26th.
AP Testing 2022
Information:
The College Board creates the AP Exam Schedule each year. Exams must be given on the specified dates/times provided. Late Testing dates are reserved for true emergency situations and situations in which a student has two exams scheduled at the exact same date/time. Emergencies are limited to situations that directly affect either a student or a student’s immediate family member, such as hospitalization or death. All emergencies must be reported to the school on exam day and documentation is required. It is common for students to have multiple AP exams on the same date; if this occurs, students are expected to take all exams as scheduled. The registration and payment window has closed for 2022; no refunds or additions are provided at this point.
On exam day, students will report to the school at 7:30am for morning exams and 11:30am for afternoon exams. Late entry is not permitted. Students will report to the lower gym entrance for each exam and wait until the exam proctor admits students. Students are exempt from all classes on exam day and can leave campus after their morning exam or arrive to campus at 11:30 for their afternoon exam. No permission slips or emails to the attendance office are necessary. We will submit the AP exam attendance roster to our attendance secretary so that she can make corrections after each exam. We ask for your patience as these attendance corrections take time. Students who cannot drive themselves to their exam will need to be dropped off and picked up at the appropriate time. Mrs. Tallant will send out pre-exam instructions in late April with details about the approximate length of each exam.

This fun event included a DJ, games like spikeball and cornhole and Popbar was on hand for a special sweet treat. This one-mile fun run proved to be an exciting event for all.
Extra Help and Makeup Opportunities
Tutorials: Each week we have four tutorials where students can go to sessions offered by their teachers to get extra help or to makeup assignments they have missed. To help students makeup longer assignments, we will combine our tutorials in to one long tutorial on the last Thursday of each month. Please see the graphic below with the dates for the long tutorials.

Senior Classroom Guidance (Week of April 12th)
Counselors will be conducting Senior Classroom Guidance through English classes the week of April 12th. We will be reviewing transition information to college including course planning and financial aid, tips to finish the year strong, end of the year reminders, and doing a gratitude activity. Students will also be sharing their Postsecondary plans with us through a Senior Exit Survey.
YOUSCIENCE
Has your child completed a YouScience Assessment? YouScience contains a series of brain games that measure a student’s aptitude(s) and combines it with your student’s career interests. At the end of the assessment, your student will have a comprehensive list of careers that are aptitude fits, interest fits, and overall fits. Our goal is to have all of our students complete this assessment by January so that we can review it with them. This assessment will help us to answer the question “What skills and knowledge do I need for my career” as we start looking at postsecondary options.
We would like to encourage parents/guardians to have their child login to the assessment to complete or review the results as soon as possible.

Business and Computer Science Programs Achieve Industry Certification
The Denmark High School Business and Computer Science Programs achieved the status of being Industry Certified by the Society of Human Resource Management. The certification process included showcasing student work samples, presenting the local FBLA Chapter's accomplishments, and various other items. Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Jeff Bearden, and School Board member, Mr. Tom Cleveland, were present for the site visit and evaluation. This certification status lasts for the next 5 years. Pathway completers in these programs will now be able to add the achievement of completing a course of study in a SHRM Certified program to their resumes and college applications.

Important Reminders
Lockers for PE:
All students are encouraged to use the lockers to store valuables located in the locker rooms as they dress for PE.
Drop Off of Items / Deliveries:
Parents are NOT allowed to drop off any items for students, with the exception of prescription medication that is housed in our clinic.
Check Outs:
Check ins and check outs to school occur through our attendance office. Students are not permitted to simply leave campus; all students must go through the attendance office when leaving campus outside of their regular dismissal times. Please note, students are not permitted to check out after 3:15 PM.
Drop Off Before School / Pick Up After School:
Parents must drop off students in front of the main entrance both before and after school. This year, we ask that you arrive no earlier than 3:00 PM to pick up your student after school in the car rider line. During dismissal, if your child is not physically present when you arrive in the pickup line, you will be directed to circle back around the parking lot to keep traffic moving and minimize congestion.
Breakfast and Lunch Information:
All students will receive one free breakfast and one free lunch each day. These meals are provided through the Cares Act (COVID Relief Federal Package).
Payment:
We ask that all parents set up an account with MyPayments Plus if you have not already done so. We prefer online payment in lieu of cash whenever possible, including lunch accounts.
Student Parking:
We are fortunate to have ample parking on campus for all students who wish to drive to school. Detailed information about parking is available on the Parking Application webpage.
Transportation for students enrolled in FVA / GAVS Part Time, Dual Enrollment, and/or IE2:
Students who are enrolled in FVA / GAVS part-time, Dual Enrollment, and/or IE2, and come to Denmark HS for some of their classes, MUST enter the building through the front doors only. To ensure the safety and well-being of all Denmark HS students, we ask that all students in this situation arrive no earlier than 5 minutes prior to the start of their first in-person class on Denmark’s campus.
