SPS Celebration Attendees
Friday night was one to remember! Not only did we get to cheer on AJ and Drew for their recognitions, we had the highest percentage of staff turnout for this incredible event! Thank you to those who not only attended, but who have been so encouraging and excited for our Comet staff.
Stephanie Gerlt
Mrs. Gerlt put on one helluva show with our Kindergarten and First Grade students. Thank you, Stephanie, as well as the K/1 and specialty teachers for your flexibility and willingness to help make the Barnyard Moosical a success. We are also keeping Stephanie and her family in our thoughts and prayers.
Alicia Johnson
Congratulations to Alicia on her well-deserved Teacher of the Year Finalist for Springfield Public Schools! Her presence on stage was absolutely stunning and I am proud to have her as a Mark Twain Comet!
Drew Irwin
Congratulations to Drew on his well-deserved Rookie of the Year award for Springfield Public Schools. His stoic presence on stage and his heartfelt speech moved the crowd. Let's Gooooo!
Haley Bridges
Superheroes don't always wear capes. Haley has worked extremely hard this year in supporting our Mark Twain families when they've needed it the most. She would go out of her way to help anyone and we are going to miss her terribly.

SPS Model Classrooms! - Jenny Talburt
We are excited to announce the pilot year of SPS Model Classrooms! The purpose of this opportunity is to ensure the following:
Guaranteed and viable curriculum for all grade levels and content areas that is aligned across the system.
High-quality instruction in every classroom every day
Increased understanding of the standards, structure, arc, and research behind the SPS Curriculum
High levels of curriculum implementation that result in student achievement.
Increased teacher capacity for instructional agility: anticipating student struggle, pre-planning scaffolds, planning for instructional moves on the fly, monitoring for proficiency, and high-level questioning for assessing and advancing student learning, and
Develop a teaching community across the system.
This “teachers teaching teachers” model of professional learning includes the following:
Model Classroom teachers will facilitate approximately two curriculum-based professional learning sessions (2 hours per session) each quarter using the district curriculum in their own classroom after the school day.
Facilitators will earn a $30 per hour stipend per session plus an additional hour for planning. Teachers who attend the session will earn $25 per hour.
Each session will cap at 25 participants.
Each session will also be supported by a district leader (director, coordinator, or instructional coach).
Facilitators will engage in 1 day of paid training over the summer.
The Model Classroom application includes a principal recommendation and classroom observation/video submission in May 2024.
Teachers will communicate interest in participating by responding to this Google Form by May 3, 2024, and sending this recommendation form to their building leader.
Thank you in advance for encouraging your teacher leaders to apply!
