February Makerspace

Big picture

Coming Soon... Black History Makerspace Activites

What is Makerspace?

A place where students (& adults) experience hands-on activities in a social setting. Students build problem solving, following directions, collaboration, and risk taking skills. Activities are STEAM based - both structured and free-choice. We plan to do some service oriented projects this spring. A $700 Donors Choose grant got us started with a few robots, crafts, and building supplies.

Our library makerspace is open on Wednesday before school and during all lunches/advisory sessions. Students must sign up for an activity in advance. If they want to come during advisory, they must get a pass from the library in advance and have their advisory teacher sign it. You are not required to release them from advisory, since they have other options to attend.

We have grown from a group of less than 10 in December, to 60 students signed up for our Valentine sessions. You are invited to join us. If you see something you like, we can even discuss scheduling a session with your classes.

Donations are always needed - beads, Legos, pipe cleaners, duct tape, craft kits, batteries, yarn, etc... If you have anything leftover or unused at home, we might be able to use it.

Research Resources that are Easy to Cite - Repeat Reminder

Steer your students to TexQuest resources for the ease of citing their sources! All resources within TexQuest provide a citation button that gives students a ready-made source citation, in MLA 8th edition and often other formats.

Students need to get in the habit of citing where they get their information & if all they need to do is cut and paste... they are more likely to do it! Let me know if you'd like to schedule a mini lesson on citations for your class - this is applicable to a wide variety of subject areas. I'm also willing to create a flipped video for you to share in class, let's chat!

Geeking Out!

I think all librarians have a little bit of geek in them!

You can't survive in the Howk household with a good background in...

  • Star Wars
  • Dr. Who
  • Lord of the Rings
  • Harry Potter
  • Ticket to Ride
  • Trivial Pursuit
  • Big Bang Theory
Game night is a big thing in our household - which has continued virtually as the children have moved around the country. We are even known to mash several games together to create our own Lord of the Rings/Star Wars/Big Bang trivia night.

Thank you for checking out the KHMS Flight Plan

We look forward to serving you & collaborating in 2021-2022

Wendy Howk, Librarian
