5th Grade MLK Day of Service - Volunteers Needed

All of our 5th graders will be participating in a day of service in honor of the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on Friday, January 17. This occurs each year as a "day on, not a day off" to encourage our kids, as well as all Americans, to volunteer to improve their communities. Our amazing guidance counselor, Mr. Ackerman, has been working for months to organize this event again this year at Claxton. He has confirmed all of the volunteer sites, arranged transportation for the students, ordered hot breakfast items, and secured a breakfast site.

To make this day a success, we need YOU to help also! The students will enjoy breakfast at St. Paul's Fellowship Hall (immediately across from Claxton on Hillside) from approximately 8-9am. They will then board buses to one of five volunteer sites where they will work for 2 hours before returning to Claxton by lunchtime. Please sign up here to help with donations of FOOD, DRINKS, OR A FEW HOURS OF YOUR DAY. A description of the the needs and approximate time requirements are listed. If you are able to chaperone a site, please note that you will need to provide your own transportation to the site designated by Mr. Ackerman. Please contact Amanda Pattanayak (alsevigny@aol.com) with any questions. We appreciate your help!

Share Your Love of Claxton! Become a Tour Guide!

Giving tours to prospective families is a great way to learn more about your school and a wonderful way to give back to Claxton. Tours are usually conducted on Tuesdays at 9am and last 45-60 minutes. Tours are mainly led by Student Lighthouse Team members alongside parent tour guides. Volunteers will sign up for one or two of these tours before the end of the year. Tour guides are also needed for our annual Open House, scheduled for January 28-30, 2020. An optional “training tour” will be available on Tuesday, January 14th at 9am for those interested. Please sign up to help with tours here. Thank you!

Student Lighthouse Team Looking for 1st-5th Grade Hospitality Team Members

Claxton's Student Lighthouse Team (SLT) is looking to bring on additional students to join the Hospitality Team. This team is open to 1st-5th Grade students who are not on SLT currently.

Hospitality team members at Claxton are the tour guides and hosts of the school. They host school wide events and give Claxton tours to future families. All students will be trained, and younger students will be partnered with older students.

The application linked here can be returned to Mrs. Rigsby or placed in blue folder on bulletin board by drama room. Applications are due by Wed, Jan 15.

PTO Meeting Recap

Jubeelee Celebration and Fundraiser Update

We are proud to announce that the Claxton Jubeelee is now the Claxton and Asheville Primary Jubeelee! Claxton has become sister schools with Asheville Primary School (APS) in an effort to reduce disparities in fundraising potentials in Asheville City Schools. Historically, the PTOs at some of Asheville City Schools raise over $75,000 annually, providing class enrichment, meaningful class trips, and supporting teachers and staff; while other PTOs raise less than $5,000 per year, barely able to help classrooms maintain basic supplies. This can give an edge to often already advantaged students and create tension as all our amazing students join together for middle school with disparate experiences in elementary school.

All money collected from the auction (silent and live) will be shared equally per student enrollment at each school.

As always, the entire Claxton community – parents, guardians, grandparents, friends, teachers, and staff – is invited to celebrate and support Claxton and APS at this event full of great food, music, and time to connect!

Also, the event is now on Saturday, March 14th, 2020 at the AB Tech Conference Center. Please adjust your calendars to our change in date.

Lastly, if you have any donations for the auction, please contact Amy Aiken at aepaxton@gmail.com and include the following information:

  • Name

  • Phone Number

  • Email Address

  • Name of Donation Item or Experience

  • Description of Item or Experience

  • Cash Value of Item or Experience

  • Any restrictions on the Item or Experience

No donation is too small or too big, and every dollar we raise goes to Claxton and APS. We appreciate any and all help! Thank you!

CLX Ambassadors Needed for Magnet School Open House!

We're looking for volunteers to help at our welcome table and to assist our student tour guides with giving tours for Open House Days on January 28-30. Do you remember visiting Claxton for a tour? You can help provide that positive experience for a new family! Think about the experiences you and your children have had at our school and the things that you'd want new families to know about what makes Claxton so great! The ACS Open House event gives prospective families the opportunity to visit the magnet schools and see classrooms in action.

Please click here to sign up as your schedule allows and help roll out the Claxton welcome mat to new families in our community!

A few things to keep in mind:

+ You are exactly who we're looking for! There's no experience required - other than your love for Claxton!

+ Mr. Edwards and Mrs. Nichols will be on hand to answer any specific questions that prospective parents might have.

+ Our students will be the main tour guides!! Most tours are conducted by two Claxton students from the Lighthouse Team accompanied by a volunteer parent tour guide.

Final Call for After School Arts (ASA) Class Proposals

There's still time to share your knowledge and inspire our Claxton students through our Spring 2020 After School Arts Program! Proposals for our Spring 2020 season are due Fri, 1/10. The Call for Proposals is here.

[For Spring 2020 ASA, class catalogs will be available in mid-January. Registration will open on Sun, 1/26 at 8:00pm and close on Sun, 2/2 at 8:00pm. Classes will begin the week of Feb 10-13.]

Volunteer Opportunity to Serve as Assistant Coach for Claxton Girls on the Run

We are looking for parents and community members who are interested in serving as volunteer coaches for our 3rd-5th grade Girls on the Run (GOTR) program at Claxton this spring! Our sessions will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays from 2:30-4:00 beginning in early March and running through mid-May. You don't need to be a runner to be a coach! Any adult is welcome!

If you'd like to learn more, visit https://www.gotrwnc.org/coach for a short video followed by written info about GOTR coaching. Contact GOTR at 828-713-3132 for info or, if you're ready to sign up, go ahead and click here to take the first steps! If you have Claxton-specific questions, please feel free to reach out to miriam.scott@acsgmail.net.

Chaperoning and Other Volunteering at Claxton

We welcome and appreciate our volunteers! If you wish to volunteer at any time, there are a couple of requirements that need to be completed in advance.

1) Whether you're a new or returning Claxton volunteer, an online background check is needed each year to volunteer in any capacity with students at school or as a supervising chaperone on field trips. It takes about 5 minutes to start your background check but can sometimes take 2-3 weeks for checks to be approved. You cannot volunteer until your background check has been approved, so jump over to this link to get yours started. https://bib.com/SecureVolunteer/Asheville-City-Schools/

2) Also, all volunteers need to attend a brief (~30min) Level II volunteer training with Asheville City Schools before you can volunteer at Claxton. The training is a one-time requirement (not needed each year) and this year's schedule is set so you can go ahead and check the calendar. Please see below for the next training sessions or check this year's full calendar HERE. Trainings take place in the Boardroom at Asheville City Schools' Central Office at 85 Mountain Street unless otherwise noted. No registration is required to attend the training.
