Dual Language Informational Night
Monday, Feb 27, 2017, 06:30 PM
Waterford Elementary School, Indiana 15, Goshen, IN, United States
RSVPs are enabled for this event.
The Dual Language Two-Way Immersion Program at Waterford Elementary School provides kindergarten students with the opportunity to begin a journey toward bilingualism, biliteracy, and biculturalism, in English and Spanish. The Dual Language Two-Way Immersion Program serves both native English speakers and native Spanish speakers, with each language serving as a model for the other. We use the 50/50 model with two teachers. One teacher instructs exclusively in Spanish for half of the day, and the other teacher instructs exclusively in English the other half of the day. Currently, we have posted for these positions on the Goshen Employment Site, as well as the Indiana Department of Education Job Site.
There will be a parent information meeting on February 27th, at Waterford Elementary School. Dinner will be served in the cafeteria from 6:30pm to 7:00pm, followed by an informational meeting from 7:00pm-7:30pm. See you there!
Program Goals
· Develop bilingualism, biliteracy, and biculturalism in Spanish and English.
· Achieve grade level or higher academic progress in Spanish and English.
· Participate in a rigorous academic program that will increase student achievement, and prepare students for a global society.
The Benefits of Dual Language Two-Way Immersion
· Language Skills: Students achieve high proficiency in the immersion language, and a deeper understanding of their primary language.
· Cognitive Skills: Students in immersion programs typically develop better critical thinking skills and problem-solving skills.
· Cultural Competency: Immersion students develop an appreciation for and an understanding of diverse cultures.
· Long-Term Benefits: Immersion students are better prepared for the global community and job markets where bilingualism and biliteracy are assets.
Student Pick-Up/Drop-Off
School doors open earlier than 7:15am, but we ask that students are NOT dropped off before 7:15am. Staff does not need to be in the school until 7:15am, so students dropped off before 7:15am run a risk of being left unattended. When dropping off students please remain in the line and DO NOT GO AROUND the vehicle in front of you.
Pick-Up:
Parent pick-up takes place at the side entrance of Waterford. If you are the first car, you are to pull up to the front of the door. All other vehicles are to line up bumper to bumper. A staff member will ask your students name and the student will come to you. Please be patient.
*to avoid any confusion, any end of day transportation changes need to be made BEFORE 1:30pm. All students participate in an end of day class named Success and it takes place around the building, making it difficult to find a student last minute.
Thank you for your continued support in keeping Waterford safety a priority.
4th/5th Grade Luncheon
You are cordially invited to join us for a Valentine's Day Luncheon. The luncheon will be on Wednesday, February 15, 2017 from 11:30-12:30pm. You will enjoy a wonderful meal and an activity at your child's classroom. We ask that you purchase tickets before hand, if you will be eating with your child. Those that are present will also be placed in a raffle for a chance to win some gifts like a bouquet of flowers, a box of chocolates, gift cards and so much more.
See you there!
Delay/Closings and Automated Calls
**Please see the information below regarding the automated calls that go out if there is a delay or school closing.
According to the Technology Department, the automated GCS calls will go to the first phone number listed for the parent(s)/guardian(s) with legal custody checked in SMS.
This means if you do not want to receive calls on your home phone at 5:30 am, you need to indicate to us which number you want the calls to go to.
For example, if a parent wants these calls to go to their cell #, this should be the first number listed on their contact information.
Please call our office to request changes or if you have any questions about the automated calls.
