1966- 1976 (officially ended by Mao in 1969, but continued by Marshal Lin Biao).
Mao Zedong took over China in 1949 and quickly established the People's Republic.
America was distraught and had to find another country to spread it's influence to (Korea).
Mao wanted to "cleanse" powerful officials of questionable loyalties. He also wanted to rid of citizens who were activists against his regime.
Mao's goal was to remove capitalist elements from Chinese society and reinstate Maoist orthodoxy and enforce Communism.
