Senior Newsletter #16
February 22, 2016
What happens after you submit the FAFSA?
Expect your SAR
You will receive a Student Aid Report (SAR) acknowledging that your form was processed. Review your SAR for accuracy. If needed, make changes at fafsa.gov. See short video below on correcting your FAFSA.
- The SAR will need to be uploaded to the Susan T. Buffet Scholarship Application by March 15th.
- The SAR will also need to be included with your NPS Foundation Scholarships if you are applying for any where financial need is considered by March 23rd.
Did you use IRS Data Retrieval?
If you did not use IRS Data Retrieval to provide income tax information on your FAFSA, we encourage you to update your FAFSA at fafsa.gov and use the IRS Data Retrieval process. Review this handout or watch this video for instructions. If you don’t use IRS Data Retrieval, your college(s) may require you to provide a copy of your IRS tax transcript.
Watch for financial aid award notifications
The colleges you listed on the FAFSA will provide a financial aid award notification detailing the aid they’re offering. This may include a combination of scholarships, grants, work-study and student loans. Respond to each notification (most students accept all award packages until they make their final college selection).

ESSAYS SUBMITTED WITH IDENTIFYING INFORMATION WILL BE DISQUALIFIED FROM THE CONTEST.
Essay Theme and Content:
This year's theme is: The Importance of Art. Students are asked to choose a work of art from a pre-selected list of 21 works of art, as students write, they may choose to:
- closely examine how the form, function, and/or content of the artwork work together to inspire your response and that of others,
- consider the work's social, cultural, and/or historical context,
- complement your writing with research, and/or
- compare the work to another work of art.
Your writing should engage in the reader curiosity, interest, and understanding of the work of art, of your experience with the work, and of your perspective as an author: What work of art do you find most striking? Why are you inspired by the work? Why do you return to look at it again and again? Is the work disturbing or beautiful or confusing or truthful? Dig into these ideas and consider choosing a work that challenges you. Look at the work for a long time. Make observations about its craft. Explore the things you notice and how they might provoke different reactions.
Deadline: Essays must be submitted by Feb. 28, 2016. The Teacher or Student-Sponsor must represent and warrant that he/she provided feedback to the student during the essay-writing process but did not write any portion of the Essay in any draft. The Student or Teacher-Sponsor will also be required to verify the originality and authenticity of the student's Essay.
