SLCS District Update

September 2, 2021

Note from the Superintendent

It has been 12 months since the beginning of my first “First Day of School” with SLCS. In a short twelve months we have been through a lot together and there is no place I would rather be. It is unquestionably a privilege to lead this dynamic school community. A partnership between school and home is one of the cornerstones of our district and paramount to our students' success.

Yesterday and today it was a pleasure to watch our staff prepare to greet your children. The excitement, energy, and passion that was on display was incredible. It filled me with pride and should instill great confidence in our families as our staff is ready, dedicated, and committed to helping our students learn and grow.

It is with much excitement and anticipation that we look forward to the new school year and greeting students on Tuesday. I want to wish everyone a safe and enjoyable Labor Day weekend. It is going to be a great year!

Big picture

Athletics

Thank you for the continued support and patience as we navigate through the recent Emergency Order from the Oakland County Health Department. Since the Emergency Order was released on August 24th we have been working to clarify the impact on athletics and extracurricular activities. We were recently notified that the order includes anyone inside a school building during the school day and at indoor school functions. Therefore, effective immediately, all extracurricular students/advisors, student-athletes, coaches, athletic workers, and spectators, must be wearing masks while indoors. This includes players and coaches wearing masks during contests, practices, while in the locker rooms, and other indoor team activities. Swimmers must wear masks when not swimming in the pool for practice or an event.

Food Service

Our school nutrition staff looks forward to welcoming students back to school and into our

kitchens! We will continue serving healthy school breakfast and lunch to fuel our students for success. This school year, thanks to federal pandemic waivers, all students will be eligible for free meals, regardless of family income. School meal programs nationwide are experiencing many of the same supply chain issues that have impacted restaurants and grocery stores throughout the pandemic. Our school nutrition team is committed to ensuring students continue to have access to healthy meals each school day. Just as families had to make substitutions on grocery lists last year, schools will have to make some last-minute changes to our regular menus, based on availability. We hope parents and students will be patient as we sort through these supply chain issues. We may not have the same number of menu choices or may need to change the menu for the day, but we will be sure that all students are nourished and ready to learn. We will work to substitute for items that are unavailable. We look forward to serving your child this school year.

Transportation

Cindy Helton, our Transportation Manager, is resigning from her position to explore new opportunities. Cindy always has a smile on her face and worked countless hours to provide a safe experience for our students and drivers. We wish Cindy the best and thank her for her service to our District.

Medications

Please contact your child’s building to arrange time to drop off medication(s) that must be administered while at school. In order to accept the medication, the proper paperwork must also be submitted. For more information, please visit our website by clicking the following link: SLCS Medical Information

The Den

We are excited for the first edition of The Den, a new insert to Lyon Today, to arrive at your homes in the near future. The Den will focus on celebrating the students, staff, and happenings of SLCS!

Have a great Labor Day Weekend!
