The Global Water Crisis effects almost a third of Earth's population. According to the World Bank and World Health Organization, 2 billion people lack access to clean water and 1 billion people do not have enough to even meet their daily needs. As you may or may not know, the longest the average human can go without water is only 3 days, even though people have made it 8-10 days without water.
Waterborne Disease
What is Waterborne Disease? This disease is illnesses caused by microorganisms in untreated or contaminated water. Waterborne can be spread in many ways, including groundwater which is contaminated with fecal pathogens. There are many types of this disease, but the most common are Amoebiasis, Shigellosis,Cholera, and Giardia. Most of the Waterborne diseases are caused by tiny parasites, that the human eye cannot see.
Water Usage Around The Globe
For everything living, water is a daily necessity. Some places have more drinkable water than others, which means people may be struggling to get water for there family. Most people use water everyday for things such as bathing, drinking, and more. Imagine if it didn't rain for weeks on end, and there was a water shortage in your area. This happens in many places, it is called a drought. A drought is a prolonged period of abnormally low rainfall; a shortage of water resulting from this. If this happens to you, you have to take less showers, hold off on watering your yard, and you are only aloud to use a certain amount of water.
Effects of The Global Water Shortage
There are many effects of this shortage, one of the main effects is dehydration, which can lead to death. Millions of people everywhere die from dehydration, and with water being very scarce in certain countries people end up drinking unclean water. Unclean water can lead to many diseases, some that can kill you if you don't get medical attention quick enough.
What Can You Do to Help?
How exactly can you help? There are many ways you can help, people waste water everyday and use this scarce liquid on unnecessary tasks. When you are brushing your teeth, don't let the sink run and waste water you aren't using. Also instead of taking baths, take quick showers, it can save gallons of water. These aren't the only ways, there are many programs where you can donate water to familys in need.
