Principal's Message Nov 29 - Dec 3

There will not be an update during Thanksgiving break

What a Week!

As the season turns toward the holidays, I want to share some gratitude for the fantastic people that make serving the Peabody and Watkins community so fulfilling.

To our students: you give us a daily reminder of why we do what we do! The joys of recess, grappling with a math task, excitement for a new story, and the everyday challenges of being a student in school are all reasons why I'm driven to do what I do. For me, you are fun, kind and completely motivating. Thank you!

To our staff: the level of commitment to our students continues to impress and inspire me. Reopening school any year isn't easy and this year's reopening has never be done before. From the supports some students need, the issues with our facilities, to changes I've brought on are all challenges you continue to meet in service of our students. I feel lucky to partner with you in this service. Thank you!

To our caregivers: you are such generous advocates! The level of support you to provide to our school leaders and staff is unlike any I've experienced. That support comes in kind notes, PTA financial support, and advocacy for our students and schools. You are each an essential partner in our collective success, and for that I'm grateful. Thank you!

Year 2 With Kindred - Advancing Equity at our Schools - Partners Wanted!

Are you interested in advancing equity at Peabody and Watkins? New Kindred dialogue groups launching soon!

The Cluster’s Partnership With Kindred: Kindred supports communities in collaborating toward the creation of an anti-racist and liberated society. The Cluster began partnering with Kindred last year to bring caregivers, staff, and leaders together to advance educational equity and racial justice in our community. This work took the form of two diverse dialogue groups and the ongoing development of an equity team. This year, our partnership will include three new dialogue groups to grow the community of caregivers and staff working together to cultivate a Cluster culture in which everyone experiences a sense of belonging and can thrive.

More About This Year’s Dialogue Groups: Recruitment has begun for two new caregiver dialogue groups and one new staff dialogue group. Over the course of ten sessions, participants will come together to build trusting relationships, examine their own and learn about each other's multifaceted identities and histories, and explore how racial inequity shows up in our society and our school community. After the dialogue experience, group members will join the Kindred Equity Team. This team was formed by members of last year’s dialogue group and represents a space for equity-driven collective action, as well as for continued community building and identity processing.

How To Get Involved: If you are interested in joining one of the dialogue groups, please reach out to Ryan Jones (ryan@kindredcommunities.org) or Meredith Morelle (meredith@kindredcommunities.org) from the Kindred team to schedule a one-on-one conversation and learn more about the dialogue process.

THE PANTHER FUND - Update

A HUGE thank you to all who have contributed to date -- we truly appreciate your generosity!

The Capitol Hill Cluster School PTA is excited to announce the Panther Fund, an annual fundraising campaign to support our students, teachers, staff,

and families at Peabody, Watkins, and Stuart-Hobson! Between November 2nd and December 1st, the Panther Fund seeks to raise $50,000. Our goal is to replace the income from two fundraisers that had to be canceled due to COVID – the Renovators House Tour and the Mini Capitol Hill Classic. And while we are hopeful that our spring fundraisers – the Auction and the Capitol Hill Classic – will take place as planned, this fund will ensure that our school year’s fundraising goals are met. We are asking families to please consider donating $30, $50 or $100 per scholar. Donations will be accepted through our Panther Fund Greater Giving page: https://tinyurl.com/5wmfuzmp

REMINDER: Early Dismissal PROCEDURES

Early dismissal ends daily at 2:45 pm. To facilitate a seamless pick up process, please call the main office at 202-698-3355 at least 20-30 minutes in advance, so that we can have your student ready. Calling ahead also helps to minimize the crowd of caregivers waiting in the lobby. Please be sure to have your id so we can confirm that you are authorized to pick the student up.

Thanks for your cooperation!

Kitchen and Gas Update

Despite our best efforts, we don't have an update to share about our kitchen issue. Our cafe staff are unable to cook hot meals; consequently, cold breakfast and lunch will continue to be served until we are certain the gas issue is resolved.
