Tilghman Tiger Talk
April 22, 2022 Principal Update
2021-2022 School Year
Dear Tilghman Families,
Here are a few updates and reminders to keep you informed.
MCAP Testing (Maryland Comprehensive Assessment Program)
Next week our 5th graders will be taking their ELA sections of MCAP. We will start testing each day, Monday- Thursday at 9:00. Please make sure students are well rested and on time to school. We know our students will do their best to demonstrate their knowledge.
Due to testing, our 1st, 2nd, K, and Pre-K students will have their specials in the morning. 3rd-5th grades students will have their specials in the afternoon.
2022-2023 Registration Dates
Please call to schedule an appointment to register for the 2022-2023 school year. The remaining date is 5/4. In order to plan for next year, it is important that we get students registered as soon as possible. This remaining date is for incoming Pre-K, Kindergarten, or other students new to TES. Students currently in Pre-K are already enrolled and there is nothing further parents need to do.
TCPS Out of Area Link
The OOA application process for school year 2022-2023 opened on April 1, 2022. If a parent is interested in out-of-area for next school year, they must fill out the online application form.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS
Test Taking Tips for Parents & Students
Preparing a student for testing – For Parents
1. Make sure your child gets an ample amount of sleep the night before the test.
2. Mark testing days on your calendar to help remind you and your child when the testing will take place and plan your preparations.
3. The student should eat a nutritious and filling breakfast. Avoid high sugar cereals and breakfast treats.
4. Set aside time each night prior to the test for several weeks to review the concepts that will be covered. (Work with teachers to know what concepts to review at home in preparation for the test.)
5. Make sure your student is on time (if not early) on the days of testing.
6. Set a backup alarm to avoid the possibility of oversleeping.
7. If your child is sick, please contact the school immediately to inform us.
Working with students who are anxious about testing – For Parents
1. Try not to put too much pressure on your student. Reinforce that as long as he/she works hard in preparation and does his/her absolute best, you will be proud of your student.
2. Have your child visualize success. Encourage him/her to rehearse what it will feel like to get a good score on the test.
3. Work with your student to focus on breathing. Stress is often caused by insufficient oxygen to the brain. Remind him/her to take time before the test begins to take a number of deep, cleansing breaths, exhaling slowly. (Focusing on breathing when stress levels rise helps to focus the mind and decrease stress.)
4. Encourage your child to review the night before the test, but avoid cramming. Cramming is rarely, if ever, effective. A longer, more systematic schedule of short reviews will better prepare your student.
5. Keep a positive attitude about testing around your child and emphasize
his/her ability to demonstrate what he/she has learned.

Social Emotional Learning at TES- Week of April 25th- Purpose
Dear Families,
This week our school community will be focusing on the character strength of Purpose. Purpose means you have beliefs about the meaning of life and your life’s purpose. You seek to be part of something greater than yourself.
Purpose gives individuals the sense that they are put on this earth for a reason and that they are somehow connected with humanity or the universe. People who possess a sense of purpose believe that they were put on earth for a reason. That reason can have all kinds of variety. It could be to create a unique invention, bring joy through art or music, or raise their children to become good people. These people have a true calling.
Having a clear sense of purpose in life and believing that you’re connected to a larger meaning gives individuals strength. It allows them to persevere and find courage in trying circumstances or lead with kindness and love even when it’s not reciprocated. Those with a sense of purpose have more meaning in their life -- and are more fulfilled.
Have a wonderful week!
