Curriculum Corner

We will begin typing our narrative writing this week as I continue conferencing with our writers. I have read some great stories already! The goal is to finish these up by the end of next week so we can begin our persuasive writing second quarter.

Spelling lists will be sent home tomorrow for a test 10/9. It wasn't going to be possible to meet with all of the groups this week due to Jog-A-Thon, so we will just extend our timeline!

Wordly Wise

We began lesson 4 this week. 4A & 4B are due this Friday and 4C & 4D will be due next Thursday, 10/8. The lesson 4 test will be Friday, 10/9.

We will begin learning about adjectives at the end of this week and into early next week.

Indiana History

We finished reading Chapter 1 today with some work on finding main idea and details. We will begin our review of latitude, longitude, and relative location on Thursday and will plan to take a quiz on Thursday, 10/8.

We are having some great discussions about the book The Hundred Dresses. We will finish reading the book on Friday. We will review and discuss on Monday and will take a short test over the book on Tuesday.

Science Fair has begun! We wrapped up our inquiry at the end of the last week and learned that Huggies hold the most water. If they weren't so leaky on my little guy as a newborn, I'd be tempted to switch! We talked about other factors, such as fit, cost, and softness that parents may also consider in addition to how much water they hold. Students picked their science fair topics on Monday and should be ready to run their first trials tomorrow. Science fair will take place on Friday, 10/9 at 12:15 pm. If you could please send in $1 with your child to cover the cost of their science fair board, I would appreciate it!

We will be finishing up our second unit with subtraction methods at the end of this week. We will review early next week and will take our test on Wednesday. Study guides will go home this Friday.

What Should We Do With Our Jog-A-Thon Shirt?

Please make sure your child wears his/her Jog-A-Thon shirt tomorrow (they were sent home today). Then, please save your shirt. We will ask the kids to wear these a couple more times this year for field trips and special events where it is helpful to have a common color to look for.

Chapter 1 Science Test

Chapter 1 science tests were sent home today. If your child did not do well, he/she is not alone. The science tests in fourth grade are a major shift from simply being able to identify terms to being able to apply those terms to real-world situations and interpret data. The kids always really struggle with the first test, so I am using it as a teachable moment. We took some time in class today to go over the first three short answer questions together. We discussed making sure ALL parts of the question are answered and using plenty of detail to describe our thoughts. That part of the test should be corrected. Students have until next Friday, 10/9 to fix the multiple choice questions and turn it back in. I will be giving full credit for the correct answers. The concepts in this test are also being assessed through Science Fair, which is why I'm having them make corrections instead of retaking the test.
