Mission of St. Joseph Academy

St. Joseph Academy, a Christ-centered Catholic community, rooted in faith, knowledge and values, inspires students to live the gospel message in school, the community, and the world and to achieve academic excellence through relevant and challenging curriculum.

#MrsBrucheyStrong

In honor of Mrs. Bruchey, Mr. Louis Canter (Pastoral Assistant), Father Tim, Mr. Andrew LoFaro (Operations Manager), and Mr. John Philbrook (school maintenance) shaved their heads last week. Mrs. Bruchey is continuing treatment for leukemia and appreciates your thoughts and prayers. Today, Thursday, September 5th, is Mrs. Bruchey's Birthday! Please consider saying an extra prayer for healing in honor of her special day.

Dress Down Day Tomorrow for PTO Attendance

Students whose parents attended the PTO meeting last week are invited to dress down tomorrow, Friday, September 6th. Please follow dress down guidelines in the Parent Student Handbook. Dress down passes are not needed as teachers have the sign in sheets indicating which parents were in attendance.

Hurricane Make Up Days

Please note the Hurricane Make Up Days on the school calendar. We can expect to be in school on Monday, February 17 (President's Day) and Monday, April 13 (Easter Monday).

Collections for the Bahamas

We are so very thankful Dorian remained off shore, causing minimal damage to our East coast. Although we were not affected, our brothers and sisters in the Bahamas have suffered tremendously. Our church has volunteered to be the donation site in Polk County for Catholic Charities. SJA has identified a handful of items that we are targeting for this collection. Please consider sending in any of the following items between now and Friday, September 27th:

  • Large Trash Bags
  • Bleach (Gallon Size)
  • Baby Supplies (wipes, canned juice, baby food, diapers, formula)
  • flashlights (battery, solar)
  • Toilet Paper and Hand Towels
  • Bath Soap
  • Bath Towels

Parent Teacher Conferences

We are approaching our first scheduled Parent Teacher Conferences on October 3rd and 4th. These are required conferences for parents of all students at SJA.

Parents of students in kindergarten through grade 4 will have a scheduled conference time. Please find a conference request form in your child's white envelope today.

For middle school students, parents are invited to stop by on Thursday, October 3rd between 2:30 and 6 or Friday, October 4 between 2:30 and 3:30pm. Parents can pick up their child's progress report from Mrs. Haas or Mr. Allende in the middle school hallway and then visit with teacher(s) of their choosing. These are drop-in appointments for students grade 5-8; conferences are not scheduled for middle school parents.

VPK conferences are held a bit later in the year. Parents of our VPK students can expect information about those conferences at a later date.

Falcon Express Envelopes Coming Home Today

As I mentioned at the PTO meeting last week, we are going to be using Falcon Express Envelopes (White Envelopes) to send paperwork to and from the school office. Your youngest child should be bringing home your family's envelope today. Falcon Express Envelopes will be sent home on Thursdays. Please check the envelope to see if there is any hard copies of communication from the school office, sign the outside of the envelope, and return it to school with your child tomorrow. Further, if you have anything you need to send to the school office, this is a great way to send those items in. Please note that we will not always have anything inside of the envelope. It will be sent home on Thursdays regardless so that you can use it as a method to send something into the office.

Today's Falcon Express Envelope contains:

  • A form to schedule your fall parent teacher conference for kindergarten through grade 4.
  • Information about how you can support SJA through Box Tops and Coke Rewards.

Document Volunteer Hours

The Falcon Express Envelope (White Envelope) is used to document family's volunteer hours. If you attended the PTO meeting on August 27th, or have earned any other volunteer hours this year, please be sure to document these hours on the Falcon Express Envelope before you send it back to school on Friday.

Lunch Menu Change for Wednesday, September 11

Due to the unanticipated school closure for Hurricane Dorian, we need to change the lunch menu for Wednesday, September 11th. Lunch on September 11th will be 3 Cheese Ziti, Garlic Bread and Fruit. Daily Salad bar will also be available. We apologize for the inconvenience and thank you in advance for your understanding.

Picture Day!

Our school picture day has been rescheduled for Wednesday, September 11. Students should wear regular school uniforms, NOT PE, for pictures. We will use the same preorder forms and envelopes. If you haven't sent in your order, please do so before Wednesday.

Reschedule Soaring Falcons and Shining Stars - Grade 5

We were scheduled to recognize Soaring Falcons and have fifth grade present Shining Stars yesterday, Wednesday, September 4th. Both have been rescheduled for this coming Wednesday, September 11th following mass in our school chapel. All are invited for mass beginning at 8:53am. Please remember that the new diocesan policy states that family members and guests may join us for school mass but must sit in the pews behind the school children. Thank you for adhering to this policy.

Bilingual Volunteers Needed

St. Joseph Academy is currently seeking bilingual volunteers to assist in the school office. We frequently have Spanish speaking calls and visitors. If you, or someone you know, is available to assist a few hours a day one day a week, please contact Mrs. Haas at thaas@sjalakeland.org.

Does this belong to you?

This cooler has been sitting in the front lobby since before school started. If it belongs to you, or you know where it is supposed to be stored, please contact Mrs. Dyer in the school office. (bdyer@sjalakeland.org) If it isn't claimed by Monday, we will find a new home for it. Thanks.

Calling All Room Parents!

Thanks to all who signed up to serve as Room Moms/Parents at our PTO Meeting on August 27th. We are very grateful for all the parents who volunteer to serve in this capacity. I would like to hold monthly very brief meetings with Room Parents. The first meeting will be Tuesday, September 10th immediately following morning prayer in the dining hall. We will try these monthly meetings for a few months and see how they go. It certainly isn't mandatory that Room Moms/Parents attend, but please consider joining us if you can.

If you haven't had a chance to sign up, it isn't too late. Parents interested in serving as Room Moms/Parents may show up on September 10th at 8am OR email Mrs. Haas at thaas@sjalakeland.org. We especially need Room Moms/Parents for Kindergarten and Grade 5.

Practice for Mass Choir

Students in grades 3 through 8 interested in singing at school mass on Wednesday are invited to attend choir practice afterschool on Tuesday, September 10 from 3:15-3:45pm in our school chapel. Students who attend this practice will be permitted to sit upstairs with the choir at school mass on Wednesday September 11. If your child is staying for choir practice, you may pick up him/her at the gate on Frank Lloyd Wright Way at 3:45pm. If you are not there to pick your child up at 3:45pm, he/she will go to aftercare.

Teacher Professional Development

Ever wonder what teachers do on Teacher Professional Development Days? Our full day professional development last Friday was "Data Day." This day is designated by the Office of Schools at the Diocese of Orlando as an opportunity for teachers to evaluate student data, both individual, grade level, and school wide data. SJA teachers took a hard look at individual data to identify ways to help support each student during the coming school year. Our goal is for a minimum of a year of growth for all of our students on the Terra Nova Assessments. We have a dynamic team committed to the success of each of the students we serve.
