A team of Charleroi Area Elementary Center gifted students took home two first-place titles during a Mon Valley Gifted Coalition STEM competition.
STEM stands for science, technology, engineering and math.
Diana Welch, gifted and arts teacher, has 12 students in kindergarten through grade five at the elementary center. The gifted program helps students achieve academic goals based on personal education plans.
Each month, the students compete at a school in the coalition, which represents the Monessen, Yough, Belle Vernon Area, Ringgold, Penn Trafford and Charleroi Area school districts.
The six districts field a total of 19 teams.
The Charleroi Area students traveled to Monessen Elementary Center March 9 for their first STEM-based competition.
Charleroi Area students Jacob McCurdy, William Simms, Aiden Iadanza and Ethan Signorini finished first in two of four challenges.
In the first challenge, the team had to use cups and Popsicle sticks to create the tallest possible tower, Welch said. In the second, they had to do the same using marshmallows and toothpicks.
At the beginning of each season, Welch meets with five teachers to plan the coalition schedule.
Each competition features a different subject based on a continent-based theme. This year’s theme is North America.
The next competition – centered on literature – will be April 21 at Yough. The season will end May 22 with an architectural competition at Charleroi Area Elementary Center.
Welch said she takes all her gifted students to the competitions, even if they are not competing.
“I have a lot of talented students,” Welch said. “The competition gives them the enrichment they need outside of the regular classroom. That is the whole goal.”
