NO SCHOOL for students Monday, 3/9/15

March is Reading Month!!

During the first week of the reading challenge the A2 STEAMers made it halfway to the goal of the week. Encourage your child to be the difference in meeting the goal. Take advantage of Monday off & read, read, read. Please send in adult signed recording sheets every Thursday.

In school, we will celebrate March is Reading Month with lots of reading activities and encouragement. We hope that you will take the time to celebrate with us by turning off the TV and reading with or to your children! Help your child develop a love for reading by getting creative with ways to read (i.e. read alongs, visit the book store or library, take a book in the car, while they're waiting, etc.)

Need more recording sheets?
MIRM - one stop shop has all of the information sent home with your child.

Mystery Readers

What an amazing first week of Mystery Readers! Ask your child about the mystery readers from this week. If you have not signed up, please check the schedule and consider sharing a family favorite or great picture book with us. Don't forget to send me 3 clues before your scheduled day. Also, remind Mrs. Szuszman to only announce you as a mystery reader when she intercoms the class. We will try to guess who you are as you make your way to the room for a reading.

If you have 15-20 minutes available during the day please take a look at the signup genius and pick a day.

** Pay attention to the unavailable times, we have extra specials that change every week.

Estimation... Rounding...Finding the nearest 10...

Everyday Math calls it Ballpark Estimate!
It has 2 purposes in the math process:
  • Rounding to the nearest 10.
  • Providing a tool for students to check plausibility of their work. (we will cover this more, we spent a lot of time securing the rounding)

Students worked very hard on doing estimates. Give your child a 2 digit number and ask for the nearest 10 or what 10 it should be rounded to. Students used a visual called the rounding roller coaster to understand the value of the digit in the ones place and locate estimated 10.

Expo - March 31st

Students were sent home with interview questions that we developed with the help of our expert visitor - reporter, Ms. Knake. Students were instructed to conduct a first round of interviewing of their subject. Teams will work together to identify additional questions that may need to be asked. I will email a digital copy of the questions, just in case the original did not make it home. Interview sheets should be returned Tuesday 3/10. Students learned from Ms. Knake several ways of documenting an interview like:
  • Writing the questions before doing the interview.
  • Writing the answers as they are being answered.
  • Recording the interview, audio or video, so that they can make sure they have the answers correct.
  • Taking pictures of the subject or of important things they mention in the interview.

** Please continue to email pictures of your child's biography subject.
*** Interview tapes are for student use only & should not be emailed to me.
