HPE Cafeteria News
We had another great week in the café. The students are doing a great job adapting to all the changes.
Our student prices have stayed the same this year with lunch meal deal being $2.60, milk $.50 and breakfast is $1.25. Those students eating a school breakfast are released from their buses first. Please remind your child not to get off the bus if they have eaten breakfast at home. Bottled water is $1.00. Our adult lunch price has changed to $3.36.
A lunch meal deal consist of one entree, one milk, one fruit and two vegetables. Students may select additional fruit or vegetables at an extra cost of $1.25 each.
A couple reminders when packing your child's lunch...
- Please do not pack soda
- Please do not pack lunch items in glass containers
We have a few exciting things starting the week September 4th.
- We will begin offering snacks to 1st-4th grades (ranging from $.85-$1.00 extra). Please let your child know if they can or cannot purchase these snacks at the extra cost.
- We will once again have our Veggie Bar (only on Wednesday & Thursday's) where all students will be able to get veggies. And the best part is that it will be FREE! Students that bring a lunch from home will be able to participate as well.
- We will start having lunch visitors. Please remember you will be signing up online. You must have an approved background check on file. You may not bring in restaurant food. The cost for adult lunch is $3.36 You can bring exact cash or write a check. You may not charge your lunch to your child's lunch account.
If your child has an allergy that will effect their lunch please be sure to fill out the health form and return it to the nurse. If there is a food you do not wish your child to eat or other restrictions please feel free to contact me via a phone call or email.
As in the past, you can pay online with efunds or send cash/check in with your child. If you are sending money in, please put it in an envelope with your child's first and last name, student ID number and their teacher. Student ID numbers can be written in the memo line of checks. Please do not use nicknames or just your child's first name. Remind your child to turn the envelope in to their teacher.
If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact me.
Lunch with Students - Our NEW way to sign up is ONLINE starting September 4
Counselor's Corner
I had the privilege of visiting the first grade classrooms this week and providing anti-bully lessons. We reviewed the bullying definition which is:
Bullying is
- Repeated
- It happens on purpose/not on accident
- You feel like there is an imbalance of power/you are afraid
We also read the story, The Bandaid Chicken and discussed how we can all choose to be kind and stand up for others. Finally, we reviewed different strategies to use if another student is behaving in a way that bothers or bugs a student. Those strategies are to:
- Ignore
- Move away
- Talk Friendly
- Talk Firmly
- Get adult help
I enjoyed visiting your child's classroom and look forward to visiting again soon!
Sincerely,
Nancy Logue
HPE School Counselor
Technology
Media Center
It will be another busy year in the Harrison Parkway Media Center! Students will be coming in every day for library lessons, book exchange and research. Please click on the link to learn more about Harrison Parkway's Media Center and ways that you can help us out in our Media Center.
Note from the Nurse
Parents,
Accidents happen during the day such as bloody noses, toileting issues, muddy puddles at recess, food/milk spilling at lunch, etc.... The clinic has a limited supply of clothes, so please pack an extra change of clothes (socks and underwear too!) in your child's backpack for the unexpected mishaps. If I do not have anything that fits your child, you will be receiving a call for a change of clothes to be brought to school, since your child cannot return to class or ride the bus home with soiled or wet clothes. Also, I do not have any extra shoes in the clinic, so if your child wears flip flops that are falling apart, please consider having your child wear shoes in better shape so I don't need to duct tape the broken shoe to your student's foot. Thank you for your support!
Speech Language Corner
I will start the year off by completing speech and hearing screenings within the first two weeks of school. Hearing screenings will be conducted with all students in Kindergarten, grades 1 and 4, and all new students at HPE. If your child does not pass the pure tone hearing screening, you will be notified via a letter and a re-screening will take place in 2-4 weeks with follow-up correspondence. If you do not wish for your child's hearing to be screened, please contact Mrs. VanHorn or the HPE office at 317-915-4210.
Speech screening will be conducted with all students in Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grades, and all new students to HPE. Speech errors that are age appropriate will be documented, monitored and in some cases, packets will be sent home to practice speech error sounds. Non age appropriate speech errors may warrant speech therapy, thus you will be contacted to discuss program options.
Feel free to contact me via email (tvanhorn@hse.k12.in.us) if you have any questions or concerns regarding your child's speech or hearing abilities.
Thanks and let's have a great year!

Easy Ways to Help the PTO **UPDATE**
**Our Kroger number has changed to VA241**
If you are already enrolled in the program with the HPE PTO, you should not need to change anything but please check your account at www.kroger.com/communityrewards. You can still search for “Harrison Parkway” to enroll with the PTO.
If you shop on Amazon or at Kroger, check out these completely free and zero effort ways to raise money for the HPE PTO. The prices are the same, the service is the same, you shop the same way, but a portion of the purchase price will be donated to the PTO, that’s it!
On Amazon, just go to smile.amazon.com/ch/20-0114174 to link your account to the PTO and then check out using smile.amazon.com everytime--you cannot access this through an app so fill up your cart and then open a browser to check out or shop directly on smile.amazon.com.
For Kroger, login to your online account or create one using the Kroger Plus Card number you already have or get a new one. Then go to www.kroger.com/communityrewards and enroll in Community Rewards. Search for “VA241” and select “HARRISON PARKWAY ELEMENTARY - PTO.” Then scan your Kroger Plus Card or enter your alternate ID every time you check out just like you always have.

Report a Student Absence
If your child will be absent from school, please contact us at (317) 915-4210. You may call and leave a message on our attendance line anytime before 8:00 a.m. After 8:00 a.m., our office staff will be available to speak with you and document your child's absence. It is important to let us know your child will be absent or late arrival prior to 9:00 a.m.
If you know your student will be absent for more than two school days for any reason other than illness, we ask that you complete a Prearranged Absence Form (available in the HPE office) at least one week prior to the absence. If you notify your child's teacher of an absence via email, please make sure you also contact the office by phone or email (apowell@hse.k12.in.us) to ensure that attendance is marked appropriately.
Student attendance at HPE is vitally important. Please make every attempt possible to plan appointments and vacations outside of school hours. Regular attendance improves student performance and is expected as an integral part of our state mandated School Improvement Plan.
Volunteering and the Background Check Process
Parents/visitors to HPE must have a background check on file with the school (including watching the anti-bullying video and completing the video survey) in order to volunteer in the school or to have lunch with a student. The link for the background check information can be found on link below at https://www.hseschools.org/services/other/school-safety/visiting-and-volunteering
The background checks are conducted by a 3rd party company, and there is a $13.00 fee for processing (payable online at the time of the application). Once completed, approved background checks are valid for a period of 3 years. Applicants will be notified via email when their background check has been completed and they will also notify people 30 days before their background check expires.
Safe Visitor Badges
Per HSE Policy, visitors must have their Safe Visitor Badge scanned to check-in to the building. Please download the Safe Visitor App (IPhone) or have your badge ready and available to be scanned when you come into the school office. The app is in Google Play for other types of phones. To find the Safe Visitor app, search for “SafeVisitor” (there is no space in between the words).
Upon leaving, please give your printed badge to the office staff for quick check-out.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Vicki Foutty at 317-594-4100.
