Message From Principal Engdall
Greetings Shaw Montessori,
Beginning Monday, April 25th, masking will be optional for students, staff and parents on our campus. If your child presents any symptoms they should stay home, be tested, and/or mask around others to help minimize transmission zones at school and keep us all healthy. A few other changes that were made by the Phoenix Elementary Governing Board were to reopen our drinking fountains (our bottle filling stations have remained open), the elimination of social distancing on our school busses and the elimination of pool testing. We may now welcome visitors and volunteers to our campus. You may view the changes here: https://phxschools.org/mitigation-plan-changes-april-2022/ We will not be making any other campus systems changes for the remainder of this year.
There were many questions at the Site Council/PTA meeting around our mitigation plans/systems changes for fall. Please know that we will follow the recommendations of our governing board and are hopeful that we can return to “normal” this fall. For those parents who do not yet know what “normal” looks like on our campus, we will share that information with you at our Back to School Night on Tuesday, August 2nd. Primary and middle school will be held at 4:00, lower elementary at 5:00 and upper elementary at 6:00. This event will be held in your child’s classroom. You will receive a post card by mail in July inviting and reminding you to attend. You will also receive this information by robo call, text, and email.
Don’t forget that raffle tickets are on sale in the school office as well as at morning drop off! On Tuesday, the oldest sibling in the family brought home 10 tickets. Look for the bright blue envelopes!
Wishing you the very best,
Principal Engdall

Shaw PEER Lottery / 2022-2023
Thank you to everyone who has been so patient with us as we go through this nerve-racking event every year. If you did not receive a call or voice mail from me on Thursday, unfortunately your child has been placed on the Wait List. Our roster for next year is very small, simply due to not having enough staff as we move to the next school year. If there is anyone you know that loves working with kids, please let them know about PEER Club. Have them reach out to me, or they can visit the PESD 1 website. The title is PEER Instructional Assistant. With enough staff, we can get every child off the Waitlist!
With that being said, I am hopeful that before the start of the school year, we can get a majority of kiddos off the Waitlist and into PEER.
The PEER Roster and Waitlist are posted outside the Front Office, PEER Office, and outside the front gate. I’ve also attached a digital version of the lists.
For the families selected from the Lottery, reminder that applications will be available for pick up beginning Monday, May 2, 2022, and they are DUE Wednesday, May 25, 2022 (the last day of school). The applications are NOT available to be digitally sent, as I will need the original paper applications. Also, only completed applications will be accepted, which means your child’s immunization records need to be attached, as well as showing me proof of employment/transcripts.
Please be hopeful! I know I am!

Primary Garden Spotlight
This is Elizabeth Haas and her adorable son. Elizabeth was hired to replace one of our teachers, who transitioned to a classroom assistant position. She has been part of our Shaw community for some time having two children currently attending Shaw. Elizabeth has been a great teacher helping the children navigate the many changes we’ve had in the garden this year. She has a loving and energetic presence in the garden and we are grateful she chose to work in the ODE!
Why does Elizabeth love the Primary ODE?
“I enjoy seeing the children engaging with nature while out in the garden. It is so great to watch them get excited to see the hummingbirds visit the trees, take a sample of the mint and basil leaves, and help turn the compost! The children are eager to learn new works and help out whenever they can and it's a joy to be a part of their experience. “
Some fun facts about Elizabeth:
She was born in Texas and moved to Arizona at just 9 months old. Elizabeth attended culinary school and loves to bake and she really enjoys camping with her family in their trailer whenever possible!
Think Green,
Stacie Ricks

Raffle Baskets
Talent show raffle baskets will be on display in the front office beginning the week of May 9th!
*If you have not yet donated items to your class basket please contact your classroom parent/email parent. Items must be collected by the first week of May.
This past week raffle tickets were sent home with your child (blue envelope). If you did not receive, tickets will be for sale at the talent show and are also available in the front office.
How raffle tickets work:
Each ticket is $1. If you would like to purchase the tickets, just send the $ in with 1/2 of the raffle ticket. (Keep the side that says KEEP THIS TICKET). WRITE YOUR NAME AND PHONE NUMBER ON THE TICKETS THAT YOU TURN BACK IN.
At the talent show, a ticket will be drawn. If the person is there, they can choose the basket they want. If they are not there, they will get a call and they can come into the office and pick from the baskets that are left.
Please contact me via email with any questions! I look forward to seeing the baskets come together!

Garden Update
Greetings!
I apologize for my hiatus from last week’s newsletter. Good Friday threw me off. I will make sure this blurb is robust and specific!
Many of our chicks are hatching around campus. We have three different incubators working overtime in the elementary classrooms. Even the primary students are hosting some of our newborn chicks. This has been a HUGE hit with all the students. The juice has been well worth the squeeze. If you would like to purchase some chicks then you may sign up at the front office beginning on May 2nd. There will be a signup sheet with Ms. Teresa. It is first come first serve. You may purchase no more than two chicks per family. Chicks are $15.00. Please only take home chicks if you can properly care for them.
Our outdoor kitchen is finally serving its purpose! And our newest block is pizza! The history of pizza has lots of socio-demographic nuances. The pizza began as a bland flatbread for impoverished folks and developed into a worldwide culinary favorite. We are using our OONI pizza oven. It works like a charm. The students LOVE this block. More to come on pizza. Stay tuned.
We also made pico de gallo this week. Sadly, our tomatoes are not ready for harvesting, but we were able to harvest all the cilantro from the garden. The students grimaced as they bit into the serrano peppers. It was entertaining to watch them build their spicy palate. My condolences to the students who were not listening when I said, “Make sure you wash your hands if you touch the serranos and DO NOT TOUCH ANY BODILY ORFICES AFTER CUTTING SERRANOS!” Sometimes you must learn the hard way. C’est la vie.
I am going to reinstate our bottle cap drive next week. This mural project will carry into the upcoming school year so let’s make it a habit to keep and donate our plastic bottle caps just like our cans, used coffee grounds and eggshells. You can drop off any and all of these items on the table near the front office. Thanks Shaw community!
We still need your Home Depot donations. Even $25.00 is a huge contribution. Here’s the link to Home Depot gift cards: https://www.homedepot.com/c/Gift_Cards
Here’s my email: james.obrien-moench@phxschools.org
Thank you to our parent chaperones for helping with the middle school field trip! Randi, Nicole and Eric, ya’ll rock!
Mr. Moench
