NOVEMBER 22ND-26TH

Last week our fourth graders presented their Native American mini-museums with their families and our students. They all did a wonderful job of sharing their new learning about the Native American culture. Thank you to all who came to visit. We missed this opportunity last year to have people come into our building. It makes it even more special now.

I visited the Hilltop Mall today to see our student artwork. If anyone hasn't made it there yet, it's near JCPenny and the new store for Sporting Edge. Our students' artwork is AMAZING! Mrs. Raffaeli does a great job of bringing out our students' talents. The mall was busting with children and their families waiting to visit with Santa. The train was moving slowly through the mall and as I was leaving, I saw some fuzzy reindeer with Santa's sleigh along with a camel and shetland ponies. This environment really moved me into the holiday spirit. I'm so grateful that we are able to have all of these happy and family friendly experiences.

We do not have school this Wednesday through Friday. From the Kenwood Staff to all of you, have a wonderful Thanksgiving break with your family and friends. Share the many things that you are grateful for!

Also a friendly reminder that we will have our music programs the week that we come back from break. See the information below on attire, dates, and times. Also below is the link for Kenwood spirit wear. Orders are due by December 5th. I'll get a picture of our student design winner next week.

Thanks and have a great Sunday!

Thanksgiving

As many of us prepare to celebrate Thanksgiving this week, I wanted to share with you some interesting facts about one of our Nation’s favorite holidays! -The first Thanksgiving feast lasted three days. -It’s unclear if people really ate turkey at the first feast, but they did eat lobster, deer, corn pudding, & even seal! -President Abraham Lincoln made it a holiday in 1863. -The first Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade didn’t have giant balloon animals. Instead, it had real animals from the Central Park Zoo! -Each year, Americans eat around 46 million turkeys on Thanksgiving!

November 15th-19th

Last week our fourth and fifth graders traveled to the Merryman to watch the Chicago Dance Crash perform their hip-hop moves. Mrs. Lebsack's fourth graders were selected to show off their newly learned hip-hop moves on the stage! They all did a wonderful job. I never knew we had such great dancers at Kenwood!

Our second graders traveled to Grand Island to the Stuhr Museum and had a wonderful time. They got to string popcorn and learn about life in the pioneer days. We are so grateful that they get to go on these field trips as these experiences are awesome memories for our students. Thank you to our wonderful PTO for sponsoring this trip.

The Hilltop Mall is exhibiting around thirty of our students' artwork. Please take time to find our Kenwood artists as this art show is open until January 4th. Congratulations to the students whose artwork was selected!

Things are slowing down this week but will be amped up as we get ready for our music programs and winter testing coming up. Please mark your calendars for our music programs on November 30th and December 2nd. November 30th at 6:00 is the 2nd & 3rd grade performance and 4th & 5th grade will perform at 7:00. The first graders will perform at 6:00 PM on Thursday, December 2nd. All performances are at the Merryman Performing Arts Center.

Feelings in my body

Everyone feels a lot of different feelings. We feel these feelings in our bodies. Some feelings are comfortable, and others are uncomfortable, but all of them are okay! This week, notice what feelings you have. Pay attention to clues in your body and in the situation to help you understand how you feel. Which feelings are comfortable, and which ones are uncomfortable? See if you can name your feelings.

Here at our school we want to put our empathy into action. This is called showing compassion. When we’re able to understand how someone else is feeling and do something to show we understand, we are showing that person compassion. Listening, saying kind words, and helping are three ways to show compassion. Take a moment now to think about how you can show compassion to someone today. Then find a way to do it during the day.

November 1st-5th

The month of October has flown by. Thank you so much for picking up your fundraiser items. I do not know the official total so far but I believe it's over $11,000 that you helped raise to support our students. Most of the funds will be to help pay for one extra field trip experience for each grade level. If you remember back in our elementary school days, field trips were the BEST! We all can recall our field trip experiences as they make a lasting impression. This month, second grade will travel to Grand Island to Stuhr Museum and next month fourth grade will travel to Hastings to the museum. With the cost of gas and other transportation costs, we are grateful that we still get to provide our students with these opportunities.

This month is also the Art Show at the mall. Please see the details below. Mrs. Raffaeli does an amazing job with all of our artists and this is a chance to showcase all of the work that they've done so far this school year.

Grades 1-5 will have their music programs at the end of this month and beginning of December. We are excited to perform again at the Merryman Performing Arts Center. Last year it was recorded due to Covid regulations and this year will be IN PERSON!

Second Step Focus: Same and Different Feelings

We all want to have friends here at school. But people can have similar or different feelings about the same situation. For example, I might feel scared to climb up high, and my friend might feel excited. Learning to respect other people’s feelings can help us make and keep friends! This week, notice other people’s feelings and whether they’re the same or different from yours.
