News From Loudoun Interfaith Relief
Thank You!
On behalf of all those we serve, thank you for your support in 2014. We wish you and your families a safe and happy holiday season.
There is still need and still time to help!
Donate now before the end of the year to help Loudoun Interfaith keep up the needed work through the lean winter months. We need food donations, but we also need monetary donations to pay the rent, run the trucks and refrigerators, and supplement the gaps in the donations we receive with food purchases. Take a moment and make your donation now. The need is great, but our community is greater.R.O.C.K. on Loudoun Interfaith Relief!
For the past several months, Loudoun Interfaith Relief has been participating in a food recovery program with two of our local elementary schools, Frances Hazel Reid and John W. Tolbert. Children are asked to place uneaten, unwanted and unopened food in special containers, where it is gathered and repurposed.
Loudoun Interfaith has partnered with the Loudoun County Public Schools to gather the food, with the Town of Leesburg's R.O.C.K (Recreation Outreach to Community Kids), and with Loudoun County's R.E.A.L (Raising Education, Achievement and Leadership) programs. The R.O.C.K and R.E.A.L programs pick up the food from the schools, use what they need to give their participants afternoon snacks, and deliver the rest to Loudoun Interfaith Relief.
"This is a win-win-win," says Loudoun Interfaith Relief Executive Director Jennifer Montgomery. "The after school programs are providing snacks to more than 250 kids per week and food is no longer being wasted at the schools. In addition, kids attending Frances Hazel Reid and John W. Tolbert are getting the opportunity to develop awareness about food consumption and waste. We couldn't ask for a better set of partnerships."
Leesburg Today has recently published a front page article describing this food recovery effort in detail. Click here to read the article.

IRA Rollover benefit continued for 2014 tax year
On December 16, 2014, the U.S. Senate passed a special tax provision that allows you to rollover $100,000 from your IRA to a qualified charity. You can avoid federal income tax if you are age 70.5 or older and must take a "required minimum distribution" from your IRA this year. Simply direct the funds to a charity, such as Loudoun Interfaith Relief.
In order to complete the gift by year end, you will need to contact your IRA account administrator right away. The transfer must be made directly from your IRA to the charity and will be made free of federal income tax. The gift qualifies as your 2014 required minimum distribution (RMD) if completed before Dec. 31.
Who & How:
- You or your spouse have an IRA.
- You or your spouse reached age 70.5
- You must take a required minimum distribution, but don't need the money.
- You want to avoid additional federal income tax.
- Ask to make a "direct IRA rollover to charity" to Loudoun Interfaith Relief.
- Complete the transfer before Dec. 31, 2014.
You and your spouse each may contribute up to $100,000, tax free, to a qualified charity. A direct rollover is important, otherwise the IRA owner will have to pay tax on the funds before claiming the deduction. The new law applies retroactively to charitable IRA distributions made earlier this year and to those made through December 31.
