Falcon Flash
October 28, 2022
Dear Falcon Friends and Families,
A big thanks goes to all who were able to make it out for parent teacher conferences this week. Establishing and maintaining consistent communication between home and school helps establish the support system students need for academic success as well as social and emotional health. Thank you for taking the time for this!
Monday marks the official beginning of the holiday season, at least at Forest Hills. On Halloween all K-5 students are invited to participate in our Costume Parade. This will take place during the afternoon beginning at 2:05 PM on our primary playground. Students may bring their costumes to school to change into that afternoon. PLEASE do not have students wear them to school, but wear clothing that they can wear underneath their costume.
Here are a few other guidelines:
No masks or face coverings
No toy or fake weapons
Make-up is discouraged, but make-up resembling blood is NOT OK.
Hats, Helmets, Wigs, Glasses, Sunglasses are OK
Blow up costumes are also OK as long as they do not cover the face
The parade route will be the same as our Fun Run along the sidewalk that surrounds our primary playground, and families are welcome to come and watch from either side of the walkway. Let’s make this a fun, inclusive and most of all SAFE day for everyone.
Thank you and have a wonderful weekend!
Jim Mangan, Principal

Counselors Corner
Dearest Falcon Families,
This month, we will be investing our time and attention on the character trait: GRATITUDE in our Social Emotional Learning (SEL) lessons, classrooms, and throughout our school community. Gratitude has been shown to be one of the best ways to reduce anxiety, increase happiness, & improve relationships. The practice of gratitude is a tool that both grounds us and also inspires hope, peace, and joy. For when we are grateful, we are stronger to “be the good” to our world.
One way to think about Gratitude is “choosing to appreciate the people and things in our lives.” Practicing Gratitude can increase our well-being and our happiness. Gratitude is 1 of 3 traits we will focus on throughout the year that helps students Be Well. Throughout the school, Forest Hills Falcons will be developing skills like emotion regulation, positive self-talk, and stress management. We are choosing Gratitude!
The definition students will be learning at school this month is Gratitude: choosing to appreciate the people and things in our lives.
Through our monthly Counseling Lesson, students will learn about having Gratitude for our emotions and for Coping Skills. We can bravely use those coping strategies when feelings overwhelm us.
Our monthly letters include activities to explore GRATITUDE further as a family. Enjoy connecting together with the PurposeFull Pursuits inside the PreK - Grade 5 Gratitude Family Letters!
Thank you for teaming with us to empower our students socially and emotionally. We are all the Heart of Forest Hills. Please reach out if you or your student would like more support. You can also fill out this form to Request for Family Resources.
Together,
School Counselor

Hello LOSD Families!
As we return to community gathering, we are seeing some cases of Lice and Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease. Please review the links below for more information on how to prevent, identify and treat either. Please see your medical professional for diagnosis, treatment and more information. Also, it is very important for you to bring your students medications to school if they
may be needed during school hours.

New Application for School Volunteers
For the safety of children, volunteers are required to have an approved background check when volunteering in schools.
To help streamline compliance with state and school board policies, which require that all volunteers have background checks and knowledge of other board policies -- as well as state-mandated proof of vaccination (or a qualified exemption) -- we are introducing a new all-in-one volunteer application and approval process through ou Raptor Visitor Management System.
Submitting an online application initiates the background check process. Once submitted, applicants will receive an email upon approval of your background check and you will be given access through the onsite Raptor System at all schools. Please allow up to three weeks to process your approval.
Volunteers need to submit only one application for volunteering in all LOSD schools. Applications need to be submitted annually to capture changes in background checks, policies, and/or vaccination requirements.
Volunteer Application for LOSD
Thank you for applying promptly, and for your service to our students and schools. We are grateful for our volunteers.
Bus Passes & Car Line Passes
If your child is riding a bus with a friend, or taking a different bus for a playdate etc, please have your child bring a note or call the office and request a bus pass. Additionally, if your child is going home with a friend in carline please bring a note or call the office and we'll send an end of day note so the carline supervisors are aware.
Bus drivers will not let children on a bus without a pass. Car line supervisors will not allow children in friend's cars for playdates without a note.
Thank you!

NASA Launches Power to Explore Challenge for K-12 Students
And 3, 2, 1…lift off! NASA officially launches its second Power to Explore Student Challenge, calling on K-12 students in the United States to learn about Radioisotope Power Systems (RPS), and then design a new RPS-powered space mission that would energize their space exploration dreams. RPS is a type of nuclear “battery" that, for over 60 years, has enabled many spacecraft to explore some of the harshest, darkest environments and the farthest reaches of our solar system.
The Power to Explore Student Challenge is part of NASA's efforts to engage students in space exploration and inspire interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
“Radioisotope Power Systems have enabled some of the most exciting science,” said Thomas Zurbuchen, associate administrator for NASA’s Science Mission Directorate. “They make it possible to explore the extreme environments of our solar system that cannot be reached by any other technology. I cannot wait to see what RPS-powered missions the students plan for the future of space exploration."
Entries are due by January 17, 2023 and will be judged in three grade-level categories: K-4, 5-8, and 9-12. Student entries, which are limited to 200 words, should address the mission destination and goals and describe a unique “power,” or quality, the student has that can help the mission.
The grand prize winner from each grade category (3 winners total) will receive a trip for two to NASA's Glenn Research Center in Cleveland to learn about the people and technologies that power NASA missions. All participants will receive a digital certificate and an invitation to a virtual event with NASA experts where students will learn what powers the NASA workforce to dream big and explore. Fifteen national semifinalists in each grade category (45 semifinalists total) will receive a NASA RPS Prize Pack, and three national finalists in each grade category (9 finalists total) will receive a virtual session with a NASA RPS expert.
Judges Needed
NASA and Future Engineers are seeking volunteers to help judge the thousands of contest entries anticipated to be submitted from around the country. U.S. residents over 18 years old who are interested in offering approximately three hours of their time to review submissions should register to be a judge at: https://www.futureengineers.org/registration/judge/powertoexplore
For more information and challenge details, please visit RPS Power to Explore Challenge.
About the Challenge
The challenge is funded by the NASA Science Mission Directorate’s RPS Program Office and managed and administered by Future Engineers under the direction of the NASA Tournament Lab, a part of the Prizes, Challenges, and Crowdsourcing Program in NASA’s Space Technology Mission Directorate.
