Shepard News & Notes
April 4th, 2016
Earlier today, you received information from Dr. Zoul and Mrs. Rubin about the upcoming Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) assessment. Shepard will administer PARCC according to this schedule. Please keep in mind that the times listed are the testing windows for each day. It is likely daily testing will finish much sooner than the allotted time.
Results from the PARCC test are useful for a variety of reasons. We use these data as a component for decision making regarding class placements (at Shepard and for Deerfield High School), to help us track student academic growth, to inform instruction in the classroom, and as a way to measure our school against other schools in our district, area, and Illinois.
During the testing window, please encourage your child to:
Charge their Chromebook each night of testing
Get to bed at a reasonable time
Eat breakfast
Be at school each day and be on time
If you would like, you can view practice tests that show you what your children can expect to see on the PARCC tests. You can also review suggested ways you can help your child prepare for PARCC here. Please note, students have been working hard all year toward mastery of the Common Core State Standards; these tests are based on those standards, so our daily instruction is/was the best preparation.
If you have any questions please do not hesitate to reach out to me.
Warm Regards,
John
1st Posting - Philanthropy Club Shoe Drive
Hello Shepard Parents and Community,
Shepard students are participating in a wonderful cause -- a used shoe drive -- collecting used shoes to help children less fortunate in Africa. This inspirational program, "Stuff for the Poor" was founded as a unique way for American children to help others by donating their used shoes, then sending them to African families in need. The funds raised are used solely to pay for school fees and school supplies for orphan children, mainly in Uganda.
The founder of this program, Providence Rubingisa, is originally from Rwanda, survived the 1994 Rwandan Genocide, and came to America in 2002, having to leave behind his wife and children. Upon arriving in this country and seeing the great fortune of American children, he began to think of ways that our children could help those in Africa who are so much less fortunate, while teaching lessons of a giving spirit.
Kindly donate your used shoes between April 4 -- April 17 in the Shepard lobby bins. Please remember to donate USED SHOES ONLY. Shoes of all sizes, types, and for all ages, are very much appreciated, including adult shoes.
For more information, please visit the website of Stuff for the Poor at www.stuffforthepoor.org.
Thank you for your support of the Shepard Shoe Drive, and for helping our children learn that they can make a real difference in the lives of other children around the world.
