Algeria
The Sahara covers all of Algeria south of the Atlas Mountains and water is in short supply in this area. Berber and Arab nomads have survived in the Sahara for hundreds of years. This are the two main ethnic groups of Algeria. They settled in the Atlas Mountains and on plains near Algeria´s coast. Most Berbers live in villages. Family is really important for Berbers. They make a living from farming and herding. Arab traditions are like Berbers traditions. Most Arabs were nomads which influenced Berbers to become nomads.
Berbers and Arabs Today
Both groups are Muslim and speak Berber and Arabic. They also speak French.
Nigeria
Nigeria was ruled by many ethnic groups like the Hausa, the Yoruba, and the Ibo. By 1914, Great Britain had taken over the government of Nigeria. Nigeria became independent in 1960. The capital was changed from Lagos to Abuja.
Three Different Cultures
The Hausa and the Fulani make up about 33 percent of Nigeria´s people and most are Muslims. Kano, the oldest city in West Africa, is a Hausa city and has been a center of trade for over 1000 years. About 20 percent of Nigeria´s people are Yoruba and live in Lagos. Most Yoruba are farmers. The Ibo live in farming villages and rule themselves with a democratic council of elders. A census showed that over 88 million people live in Nigeria and the Hausa-Fulani are the largest ethnic group, therefore they have the most political power.
