From the Desk of Dr. Kempf
West Families,
The Kansas assessment window is drawing near. The test will be the first state assessment in two years because the pandemic caused us to cancel last year. It is also the first time we can compare our students with those across the State and see what effects the pandemic had on our learning at West. If your student is distance learning our district will be in communication about the testing plans. However, if you are distance learning and receive special education, English-language learner, or section 504 services and accommodations the building will be in touch to schedule a time to take the assessment. The following is our schedule for in-person learners.
- Apr 19-23: Kansas ELA Assessment during ELA Classes - Grades 6, 7, 8
- Apr 26-30: Kansas Math Assessment during Math Classes - Grades 6, 7, 8
- May 3-7: Kansas Science Assessment during Science Classes - Grade 8 Only
We look forward to assessing our students to understand the effects of the pandemic over the last year. If you have any questions about state assessment, contact West test coordinator Carla Schmidt in our student services office.
Have a great weekend!
Dr. Kempf

Forsyth WINS KPR Mug Contest!
Charley is a 7th Grade social studies teacher at West Middle School in Lawrence. He holds three degrees from the University of Kansas. Charley has two children, ages 3 and 5, that keep him pretty busy, but he still finds time for several hobbies, including printmaking (his winning design is actually a print) and running. Charley began printmaking six or seven years ago. It has turned into a nights and weekend gig with several art shows a year.
When asked about the inspiration for his KPR Mug Design Contest entry, Charley said, "I'm a big fan of Kansas and public radio. I also love retro tabletop radios and have a modern version of one in my classroom." Charley says that he really enjoys listening to KPR. "I love that I can turn on KPR and learn something new each time. The topic may be something I've studied before, or something I've never heard of, but it will always be helpful."
KPR Staff was extremely pleased with the turnout of the impressive art from local talent for our 3rd Annual KPR Mug Design Contest. A big thank you also goes out to our listeners, members, and sustainers for making your voices heard about the next KPR Mug Design!
