Below are some FAQs we recently received from Elementary Education
Q: What are the expectations for Cohort B students on August 17, 18, and 19 since we will not see them face-to-face until August 20?
A: For kindergarten students, this is considered part of their staggered enrollment, so there is no need to plan remote instruction for Cohort B students in kindergarten for Aug 17, 18, & 19. For students in grades 1-5, one suggestion is to post basic review, introductory, and/or “getting to know me” activities that are typically done at the beginning of the year when students return to school. These can be posted online for students to complete and bring with them when they come to school on August 20. If your school has already made instructional plans for Cohort B on August 17, 18, and 19, you are encouraged move forward with those plans.
Q: Since we are now utilizing the iReady Reading Diagnostic, will schools still be required to administer the NC Check-Ins for 4th and 5th grade reading?
A: OCS will be utilizing iReady Diagnostics in both Reading at Math for BOY, MOY, and EOY in grades K-5. Therefore, the use of NC Check-Ins in both Reading and Math will be optional.
Q: Will any local reading diagnostics be required in addition to the iReady Reading Diagnostic?
A: The iReady Reading Diagnostic will be the only required reading diagnostic for students in grades K-5. Additional OCS reading assessments will be optional and can be used as necessary to further isolate student needs and progress monitor. OCS will continue to administer the local K-2 Writing Assessment for each grading period. Additional information on accessing, administering, and scoring local reading assessments will be shared with coaches and teachers.
Q: What are the requirements for the KEA this year?
A: The KEA has been renamed and is now known as the Early Learning Inventory (ELI). Kindergarten teachers will be required to assess students in the following domains: Social-Emotional, Cognitive (Mathematics & Approaches to Learning), Language & Literacy, and Physical. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the variation in school reopening plans, DPI has updated the requirements for the 2020-2021 school year. For the 2020-2021 school year there will be an initial extension of 30 school days to the 30-day requirement for a screening of early language, literacy, and math skills (now approx. 60 school days) and the 60-day Checkpoint reporting period (now approx. 90 school days). Vickie Brown will be sharing additional information through elementary coaches and literacy contacts.
Some good questions from SBES staff:
1) Are student issued laptops coming back to school for at least the first couple of weeks of school (for use of BOY iReady Math assessments and showing/navigating/getting used to Teams)? Devices will be rolled out starting day one. We will start with fifth and work our way down as quickly as we can. Meredith & Kristyn will be working on this & we hope to have a schedule by the end of the week.
2) Will we (teachers) be able to have any devices that we turned in last year (classroom laptops/tablets/iPads) available to keep in the classroom as we have in the past for classroom use?Depending upon what laptops we have left and working we may be able to push out a couple to the classrooms for extras. Don’t expect to have a whole center as there really isn’t a need for that with everyone having one to ones. We will be using some classroom laptops for teacher assistants.
3) Do we need to come up with a special plan for bathroom use for the students? As far as bathrooms just send one from your class at a time and just train them that no more than a couple in the bathroom at a time. If there are more than a couple students in there, just come out and wait patiently in the quad. Ain’t nobody got time for potty patrol:)
4) What is our “blanket statement” to relay to parents next week involving remote learning (we want to make sure we uniformly tell parents the same thing)? Are we required to send home “work” next week?Parents will be receiving a parent elementary remote learning guideline being pushed out first by the district and I will also put in our parents Smore. It will explain the expectations for remote learning. ***Hot off the press (even though I already told parents otherwise....oops, I will fix that) YES we will need to give some remote assignments to Cohort B to begin to work on August 17, 18, & 19. See FAQ posted above.
5) Can we add websites/stuff to Clever? No, only district wide programs can be added by the district to Clever. I like your thinking though;)
