Second Trimester Curriculum Update
In English Language Arts this trimester the students focused on reading and interpreting nonfiction text. The students looked closely at text structures and features of this genre to support pulling out information and using it to draw conclusions about what they read. In writing, students used the text structures to support note-taking and their research projects. Take a peek into their Google Classroom this weekend to see the 4th grade weather projects and the 5th grade Research Round-up projects. I know you will be impressed.
This trimester in math the students focused on fractions. The fourth grade started their unit by comparing fractions and finding equivalent fractions. They learned how to use a number line to compare fractions. They also worked with finding multiples and common denominators to compare fractions. In 5th grade, they multiplied and divided fractions as well as reviewed the concepts from 4th grade.
In 4th grade science, students focused on how the Earth changes over time. They researched and experimented with fossils to prove that the Earth changes over time slowly as well as quickly with natural disasters such as earthquakes. In 5th grade science, the students explored the properties of air through air pressure experiments and research to prove that air is really there. They also learned about the three states of matter.
In 4th grade Social Studies, the students continued their tour through the United States and focused on the midwest region this trimester. In 5th grade, the students worked through the American Revolution, learned about the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution.
Remember, a lot of student work is in Google Classroom. Take a few minutes this weekend and have your child access their materials to show you how hard they have been working this trimester.
Read A Thon
We’re halfway through the month of March which means we have a few weeks left in our Read A Thon! So let’s keep the reading minutes going and the donations coming in! As a reminder, the donations will go toward a new playground for our children at LAF. Additional funds will be donated to Blink Now! (see below). Thank you for helping make LAF Read a Thon a success!
Click here for instructions on how to participate.
If your child lost their log in information please reach out to our Read a Thon chairs Jennifer Ferrie <jenniferferrie1@gmail.com> Kelly Sachs <ksachs10@gmail.com>, Shruthi Akhilesh <shrushei@gmail.com>, Rozina Daruwalla <rozina.daruwalla@gmail.com>
The Wild Robot by Peter Brown ~ Part
Today the students discussed the following questions with each other.
- Roz says to the bears, “I forgive you.” Is this genuine forgiveness? Is Roz capable of this?
- At the end of chapter 58, Roz said "Perhaps I a simply meant to help others." Why did she say this? What were the animals talking about when Roz made this statement?
Finish the book by March 25th. Our next reading goal is 375,000 minutes by March 25th.
Take a few minutes to view the latest video from Dr. Holly Jones. Using "The Wild Robot" by Peter Brown as an example, Dr. Jones explains how complex food webs can be and how those webs can impact the ecosystem.
Subscription Busing 2022-2023 School Year
